What does Melinda learn in her Art class? Melinda arrives at high school feeling sad. Because she is facing the fact that she got raped at a party. People call Melinda ‘’squealer’’ because she called the cops during the summer party after she was raped. She does not want to tell anyone about what happend ,so no one knows. she finally tells Rachel what happened to her.While Rachel does not believe Melinda, Melinda begins to feel free after speaking up. Art class lets Melinda explore her emotions. And the teacher Mr. Freeman treats students like intelligent human beings ,and tries to show them the reality of his life not only as a teacher. Sometimes Mr. Freeman bores Melinda ,but she knows he is speaking the truth as he sees it. Mr. Freeman does somethings for Melinda that nobody else can or wants to do. For example, he can relate to her suffering. Mr. Freeman also offers Melinda himself by paying attention to her . Melinda learns that perfection is not required ,and imperfection is what we grow on. Melinda does not want to talk about her dark secret to anyone , but the more her feeling overwhelm her the more she completes the project. The tree is a symbol of herself. She is having to come to terms with what happend to her at the summer party. Melinda does not feel good about herself. Once she comes to terms with her rape she takes full control of her life. Melinda knows that keeping silence about the problem is what is destroying her. So she finally speaks about the trauma. Once Melinda does this the tree project which symbolizes herself ,can finally grow into the beauty it is supposed to be. Melinda goes back to where she was raped and she wishes to replant herself. This means Melinda wants a new start a fresh start. This is part of Melinda’s growth and her own
