The book “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier” is an autobiography about a boy named Ishmael who went through so much at a young age. This book should be read because it’s a story you could relate to and give you a perspective of how society is today than it was before and how it has affected people across the world. On the (front cover of the book) Carolyn See from the Washington Post says “Everyone in the world should read this book… We should read It to learn about the world and about what it means to be human.” She’s right, reading this book will provide you with facts you never known and could change the way you see things today.
Frank Luke was a world war 1 and 2 as a pilot his name was Balloon Buster shooting down 14 balloons and 4 airplanes with a score of 18 coming in second Frank Luke was born in Phoenix, Arizona with German immigrant parents also Frank Luke was the first airman to get the Medal of Honor. Befor he was famous he He enrolled in Army flight training, graduated in January of 1918, and immediately shipped off to France. Frank Luke served in the world war 1 also 2 as Army flight, he end up dieing mystery until he did not come back from one of his missions. He was called the balloon buster because he shot down 14 balloons. Frank Luke had many challenges he had to faced liked, “He was killed near Mureaux, France by enemy soldiers when he refused to surrender and tried to hold them off with a pistol.”
Heracles, also known as Hercules in Roman mythology, is one of the most famous heroes in Greek mythology. He is renowned for his strength and courage, and his hero journey is a classic example of the hero's journey archetype. Stephan Fry's version of the myth provides a unique perspective on Heracles' journey, which can be divided into three parts: departure, initiation, and return. The departure stage of Heracles' journey is marked by his exile from Thebes, the city where he was born. As Fry explains, this was the result of a tragic mistake he made, killing his own wife and children in a fit of madness.
Early in March 1946, we left Camp Cooke by train and passed through the southern states to Fort Eustis, Virginia. We stayed at this camp for about a week while attending a course designed to deepen our understanding of democracy. We then moved to Camp Shanks, New York, for a few days before boarding a ship that sailed to Le Havre, France. Theme 1: Family– In North Korean concentration camps and North Korea in general, there was no concept of “family”. Shin was born and raised in the concentration camp, and he did not have a loving or caring relationship with his mother, father, or brother. Shin even saw his mother as another competitor, and he rarely spoke or interacted with his brother. “When he was in the camp–depending on her [his mother] for all his meals, stealing her meals, enduring her beatings–he saw her as a competition for survival,” (16). Outside of the camps, North Koreans also turned in whoever spoke out or went against the leaders of the country, and their rule, even if it was their family members.
In the memoir of Escape From Camp 14, by Blaine Harden, a young North Korean boy named Shin Dong-hyuk struggles through the hardships that permanently scar him in a labor prison camp called Camp 14. In this novel, people are portrayed as indifferent on what is happening inside of North Korea. This is probably due to people not being aware and how serious the dictator of North Korea treats its people. Shin is one of the victims exposed to the evil clutches of the camps and the dictator. Because he was born inside the camp, he doesn’t know the outside world, experiencing a loss of innocence.
The civil war in Sierra Leone has taken its toll in the 1990s. The aftermath of the destruction due to the rebels were equivalent to the actual war. Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, and Mariatu Kamara, author of The Bite of the Mango, both share their personal stories of their memories in Sierra Leone. Both at just the age of 12 their lives were war filled and were forever changed. By age thirteen he was a child soldier for the Sierra Leone Armed Forces and she was a mother to a baby boy.
The story Camp Harmony by Monica Stone is about a young Japanese American girl that writes about her and her family's adaption so far at Camp Harmony. The girl and her family sat on the bus quietly only hearing a chatter from a group of university students who began to sing college songs. Some of the other people on the bus stared angrily at the group of students which caused them to raise their voices only to wake a baby up. At noon, the bus had arrived to a small town. Some of the passengers were excited to see what it looked like and others just commented on what they had thought about it.

I'm a cautious person. Before this summer I had never stepped outside of my comfort zone. The longest I had been away from my family was for a week in the fifth grade when my entire class went to camp, and even then I was surrounded by familiar faces and friends. That is why when I was awarded the honor to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Girls' State camp, I was wary of experiencing such a big change. After being dropped off at the MSU dorms on the first day I was left with a HUGE feeling of angst and dread.
A Field Guide for the Hero’s Journey it’s a guide that inspire us to want to become better to become heroes of our lives. Jeff Sandefer and Rev. Robert A Sirico inspired me with this book. While I was reading it I had the feeling that I want to go out and show the world who I am, and what can I do. I want to become a hero.
Would the statement, all heroes and heroines are originated from the same basis be true? Most likely, ones favorite hero novel would follow the hero’s journey which is the cycle of the hero’s adventure involving different archetypes. A hero novel does not necessarily have to involve supernatural powers and the hero does not necessarily have to save the world; a hero can go through the hero’s journey to save one person or to reveal a hidden truth. If a story follows the hero’s journey, it includes the three categories of the archetypes—character, place, event. Midwinterblood written by Marcus Sedgwick is one example of a novel that fits into the hero’s journey archetype.
According to Joseph Campbell, an American mythological researcher, in his famous book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Campbell researched common patterns between hero myths and people’s personal stories from around the world. Heroes in Campbell’s novel undergoes twelve steps known as “The Hero’s Journey”. “The Hero’s Journey” is a structure derived from The Hero with a Thousand Faces that outlines the basic structure that all heroes follow. For example, a person has to get a call to adventure, meet mentors, and gain a reward in order to be defined as a hero. As stated by Campbell, all heroes are considered different in the ordinary world in which they live in and possesses a characteristic that makes them feel out of place in their ordinary
We all have heroes in our life whether they are fictional or real. Some are more epic than others,but still they are heros. An epic hero in literature is defined as a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. Epic heros are said to follow an literary archetype which is defined as a typical character, an action or a situation that seems to represent such universal patterns of human nature; also known as universal symbol, may be a character, a theme, a symbol or even a setting.
Death Camp Treblinka: Survivor Stories is a documentary about the final two survivors of the Nazi death camp called Treblinka. Treblinka was arguably the deadliest camp in Nazi history, however, it is also one of the lesser known camps. The Nazis worked very hard to cover this particular camp up. They destroyed all of the building and burnt all the bodies. Although and estimated 850,000 people died here, there was little to no evidence of what occurred.
