Have you ever wondered how we can make the fishing industry sustainable? If so, this report will outline how we can ensure sustainability in the fishing industry. The fishing industry is one of Canada’s earliest industry. Canada has one of the most diverse fisheries in the world. Most of the production of fish is exported, this is approximately 75% of Canada’s production. Canada ranked seventh in the world’s largest fish exporter in 2013. Before exporting the fish, it is inspected and controlled by Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Canada has a balance in trade as the fish exports are larger than seafood imports. Commercial fishing occurs in the east and west coasts, as well as the fresh water lakes. However, the east coast is where this industry is primarily located. Nova Scotia is the leading province as 30% of production occurs here. It is followed by British Columbia and Newfoundland with 20% of production. The large amount of money is important to the economy as it helps the economy and makes it stronger. Such as increasing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and establishing Canada’s welfare. In 2016, $6.6 billion was made in Canada through exporting its production of fish to over 130 countries across the world. This is one reason how the fishing industry helps the economy. Apart from the large amount of money which is brought into the economy, the fishing industry creates a large amount of jobs. Jobs are needed in order for people to meet their necessities. The jobs allow the economy to be more stable as the citizens of the country are not dependant on the government to provide them money.
