All economies are a mixture of command economy and market economy. Along with that, they are also Democratic, Authoritarian, or Totalitarian. The economy in Canada undoubtedly leans towards one side more than the other when it comes to whether it is a command or market economy, and the same can be said when it comes to being Democratic, Authoritarian, or Totalitarian. To conclude, Canada leans more towards one side when it comes to the types of economy, as well as when it comes to the type of government. Along with the overall freedom score Canada’s scores for trade freedom, investment freedom, and financial freedom are all 80.0 or above. Meaning that individuals in Canada have a lot of freedom with their economic choices. As of 2013, Canada has a freedom rating of a one (one being the best, seven being the worst). Civil liberties were also ranked a one (one being the best, seven being the worst). In addition, Canada’s political rights ranking was also a one, on the same scale. Firstly is that the Canadian government is in charge of natural resources, rather than them being privately owned, which is still typical with market economies, even though it is more command-like. Furthermore, Canada’s government also gives subsidies for fossil fuels. Essentially, this means that the Canadian government is spending billions of dollars by either giving tax breaks or just handouts of money to fossil fuel companies. This is something that the current Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, had originally promised to do away with, but has not. This proves that there are characteristics of a command economy within Canada’s primarily market economy because there are billions of dollars being handed out to companies, when it could be used to go towards civilians, and bettering canadian life.
