A New Battlefront “Pain is a message that you don 't have to listen to.” – Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg When it comes to the world at large, cancer is one thing that society loosely defines as soul-crushing. Though the cure for it is still being discovered, its malignancy can still be fought. One of the leaders in the battle against cancer is Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg. He is a hero and should be recognized as one because he helps in the fight against cancer, aids with young kids ' issues, and does not pursue his goals for personal gain.
When David Servan-Schreiber, a dedicated scientist and doctor, was diagnosed with brain cancer, his life changed. Confronting what medicine knows about the illness and the little-known workings of his body 's natural cancer fighting capacities, and marshaling his own will to live, Servan-Schreiber found himself on a fifteen-year journey from disease and relapse into scientific exploration and, finally, to health. Combining memoir, concise explanation of what makes cancer cells thrive and what inhibits them, and drawing on both conventional and alternative ways to slow and prevent cancer, Anticancer is revolutionary. It is a moving story of a doctor 's inner and outer search for balance; radical in its discussion of the environment,
My interest in cytopathology sparked during my first month of pathology training when we were called for a parotid mass fine needle aspiration, it was a case of mammary analogue secretory carcinoma, seeing my attending describe the morphology of the cells to render that diagnosis, was not only inspiring but also exciting. Since that moment I waited eagerly for my first cytopathology rotation . I enjoyed every second of my cytology and FNA rotations where I was able to gain hands on experience performing FNAs, and I also realized how crucial is the patient interaction in this specialty for which my previous experience as a clinician gave me great advantage. Cytopathology is an extremely challenging field that pushes a diagnostician to integrate the clinical, morphologic and immunophenotypic features of each disease to reach the correct diagnosis.
Medicine for me, seems to be the perfect balance of scientific theory, human pathology, and ethical moral dilemmas. Medicine has struck me as a life-long, challenging yet fulfilling career, of which no one day will be the same. Whilst reading on the biochemistry of cells, in books such as Chemistry of Life by Steven Rose, I was shown the ways in which chemistry builds the foundations for cell biology within the millions of ways that chemicals interact within just a few metabolic pathways. This lead me to explore the ways biochemistry interacted with human pathology, how these pathways are not always perfect, particularly in cancer when reading The Cancer Chronicles by George Johnson. Not only did the science of cancer interest me greatly, but also into the lives of doctors and surgeons who treat patients suffering from the harsh reality of cancerous tumours.
Having the opportunity to work with underserved populations has sparked my interest in an area of medicine I previously did not know about. As a volunteer, I served as a patient advocate. As part of my responsibilities, I sat with the patients before, during, and after their visit to make sure their needs were met. Not all of these conversations were intense and deep-rooted, but to see the overall impact I was able to have on the patients as a volunteer was what caused me to be enamored with medicine. In addition, being a patient advocate was a great way to provide help to those that needed it the most.
Witnessing my cousin's sudden heart attack gave me an insight into the advances in modern 2 medicine. Seemingly simple procedures such as coronary angiograms and stent insertions allowed 3 him to continue in normality, and the tremendous role the doctors played made me appreciate 4 how fulfilling being a doctor would be in such circumstances. 5 Prior to deciding on a medical pathway, I participated in the Biomedical Raising Aspirations 6 Programme. I attended lectures by Clinical Specialists, in particular one about the emerging 7 research of proton therapy.
Cancer is a disease that can affect anyone and has unfortunately increased in rate in the past years. Managing a cancer diagnosis is usually a very hard and stressful situation for people and family members. Becoming more informed about your diagnosis should be easily accessible and uncomplicated, therefore, the National Cancer Institute (NIH) should be one of the websites to go, when in need of information regarding cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute’s, overview and mission statement, this website is one of the government’s primary sources of cancer research and training. Meaning that the website and information are mostly funded and reviewed by the federal government.
These instances combined with a passion for medicine are what has lead me to pursue this unbelievable and fulfilling career. Foremost, like many determined and selfless students I want to attend medical school because of my interest in medicine and the ability to provide care to others through clinics and research. Over the last few years I have been working in a clinic along side numerous physicians, having been fortunate enough to learn from some of the best. In my opinion nothing is more satisfying than evaluating a patient, determining the correct diagnosis, and then communicating a prognosis and plan of treatment to help cure the patient of any disease or ailments. It is the patient interactions that have attracted me to medicine.
Rising College Debt College costs are rapidly rising. It is an undeniable fact and one of the major issues arising from this problem is student debt that in major cases can go into hundreds of thousands of dollars. National student debt is approaching 1.3 trillion dollars in the United States and rising every year (Douglas-Gabriel). Unfortunately, the majority of higher paying careers today a college degree is a requirement, and this situation is not likely to change. Different loan repayment options, more scholarships, and more help from state government could help offset the rising cost of higher education.
I have always sought new experiences and wanted a personal "Wheel of Fortune" in life to guide me. Regardless of how I spin that wheel, it consistently lands on one crucial connection: bringing happiness to others by aiding them in their recovery journeys. Witnessing my grandfather's challenging journey with prostate cancer profoundly impacted me, igniting a passion to join the healthcare field. I aim to be an empathetic, loyal, and steady support system for my patients as they overcome obstacles, advocating for them as a Physician Assistant (PA). From a young age, I witnessed the trials and tribulations of my grandfather's recovery journey.
After graduating UCLA, I began working at a cancer treatment clinic, where I am gaining real-world experience in the medical field. As the clinical trials coordinator, I am in frequent contact with the patients and I also work with outside facilities and within the clinic to coordinate patients’ treatments. Recently, I have been managing the case of a patient with metastatic stage IV prostate cancer. In order to ensure that the treatment process flows smoothly for the patient, I must be aware of every detail from insurance coverage to chemotherapy medications.

His role as an oncologist has profoundly influenced the manner in which I plan to practice medicine in the future: with respect, compassion, and empathy for my patients. It was my observation of his interactions with cancer surviving patients that first inspired me to pursue medicine. These interactions inspired me not only to embark on a profession where I could serve others, but also make a difference in the lives of others. I believe I can make the biggest impact in the lives of my future patients by combining my passion for the clinic and science as a physician-scientist. Though I am early in my medical journey, and am willing to keep an open mind, it is only natural that I yearn to pursue a profession related to oncology.
In the summer of 2022, I participated in a high school cancer research program by BC Cancer, and it is the most significant contribution to myself and my extended communities due to its impacts on the scientific field, the world and my personal growth. My desire to play my part in society and create a positive change in the world was the reason I volunteered for the summer internship. With cancer as the second leading cause of death, I am motivated to commit myself to cancer research, hoping to prevent cancer patients from suffering and discover the panacea for it. I wanted to give my best shot to help others and give back to society with my knowledge and skills. I went through multiple selection rounds, including the review of documents,
The level of care that the varying healthcare professionals provided to these patients was fascinating and became intrigued to a career path in the medical field. Over the next couple of years, I narrowed the possibility
