In the summer of 2022, I participated in a high school cancer research program by BC Cancer, and it is the most significant contribution to myself and my extended communities due to its impacts on the scientific field, the world and my personal growth.
My desire to play my part in society and create a positive change in the world was the reason I volunteered for the summer internship. With cancer as the second leading cause of death, I am motivated to commit myself to cancer research, hoping to prevent cancer patients from suffering and discover the panacea for it. I wanted to give my best shot to help others and give back to society with my knowledge and skills. I went through multiple selection rounds, including the review of documents,

These steps are valuable to the research community and bring us closer to eliminating cancer around the globe. Furthermore, three of my public speaking experiences at the Deeley Research Centre about scientific theories and the discoveries of my research projects have enlightened researchers about the foundations and the latest developments in the field, helping them with their current work. In addition, the presentations sparked debate and discussions on several innovative topics, questioning the "what if." For example, we examined the implication of CAR T-cell therapy on various revolutionary approaches, exploring different possibilities for scientific advancements. By sharing unique and creative ideas, it is beneficial for everyone as a team to work together and better navigate projects, influencing the world and the science community …show more content…
My supervisor is a quiet but inspiring leader. She is well-rounded and successful in many fields: profession, athletics, and personal life. Nevertheless, her road to her career is not a smooth sailing. She has encountered a lot of obstacles as well, but what makes her different is her attitude. Trying her best every time, she reaches where she is at; thus, I admire her wholeheartedly. As my role model, she inspires me to see the millions of possibilities in life. My co-workers taught me some life lessons as well. From their personal stories, I recognize that kindness is crucial to the world. Throughout the internship, my co-workers were kind and patient with me, especially when I am a high school student who is not as knowledgeable as other hardscore research scientists. Not only will you be happier if you are kind to others, but you will also make their day easier. People tend to remember your kind act and return the kindness. I am thankful to have my supervisor and co-workers guiding and supporting me during the internship, and I will not forget that. I will return the kindness by positively contributing to the scientific field and the world. Therefore, "be kind" has become my motto in life. Apart from developing communication skills in the workplace, I also gained scientific knowledge and laboratory skills. Running the book club for the research centre, I read textbooks and organized content to produce an engaging
