I t has been 145 years since one of today’s biggest cities was burned to the ground. One normal day in the city of Chicago, a fire started in the O’ Leary’s barn on October 8th, 1871. There was dry weather and most of the city was made from wood. With the wood, and the dry, windy weather, the city was very flammable. Once the fire started, it spread to the whole city.
We need firefighters just as much as we need the military to protect our country. They also need money to maintain their apparatus. The main way fire companies get their money is through donations and fundraisers. They often put a lot of work into it and they don't get much money out of it. Because of this I propose that we make a tax.
Three main factors to this trend in cancer is frequent exposure to environmental carcinogens, inheritance of cancer genes and having a weak immune system. For instance, “ The results of the research indicate that DNA damage does occur in workers exposed to low concentrations of styrene.” (Doc. D) Since workers are frequently being exposed to carcinogens their cells are vulnerable to damage. A majority of these workers that come in contact with these carcinogens work in construction or agricultural fields.
On April 17th 2013, a lethal explosion occurred at the West Fertilizer Company’s plant in West, Texas (U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, 2013). The violent blast fatally injured 12 emergency responders, and three members of the public (U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, 2013). Over 260 individuals suffered injuries that required medical attention, while more than 150 buildings incurred damage (U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, 2013). Upon examining the incident, it is apparent that failed leadership contributed to the occurrence of the blast, and exacerbated the damages. Over the discourse of this paper, leadership failures will be discussed, and a leadership plan will be presented
As a current student at Ridge Fire Academy, I have learned so much about myself and what it takes to become a Fire Fighter. The instructors have taught us and informed us on how dangerous this job may really be. From the stories of their past experiences, to scars they have received, it is apparent that danger may be present at anytime. The unfortunate story of Lieutenant John Mickel and FireFighter Dallas Begg is a testimony to that concept which should always be remembered as a learning tool in the firefighting world. May they never be forgotten.
Firefighters have not always had the level of safety of today’s turnout gear. Historically, most firefighters fought fires from the outside and rarely entered the burning structure. Initially, firefighter's clothing was more for warmth and dryness than for protection from fire. In the early 1800’s felt caps were worn more for decoration than functional use and provided the firefighter with little to no head protection. In 1830, Henry Gratacap, a volunteer firefighter in New York City, invented the earliest version of the modern firefighter helmet.
"The Most Dangerous Game" is an appropriate title for the text because the story is about a man named Sanger Rainsford, a big-game hunter, who becomes the prey of another hunter, General Zaroff. General Zaroff is a wealthy man who has become bored with hunting animals and has turned to hunt humans for sport. He sees it as the ultimate challenge and the most dangerous game. One of the reasons "The Most Dangerous Game" is an appropriate title is because the game involves hunting humans; The central theme of the story is the idea of humans being hunted for sport, which is a dangerous and disturbing concept.
Do you know the two main professions categorized as first responders? Both deal with dangerous and unpredictable situations which require executing life-saving decisions in a split second. Those working in both professions live and breathe by the same oath to defend the constitution, have a willingness to help others in need, serve and protect unselfishly, and have the courage to perform the duties of the job, daily. They are Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters. While they do share many similarities with their training, the differences in their calls for service and lifestyles are what really sets them apart.
The chemical composition of smoke may have very many unlimited substances and hence the composition of chemicals is informed by the molecular composition of what is burning (Alarie, 2002 p.260). If the room burning contains nitrogen from PU foam, PAN, or nylon the smoke will contain hydrogen cyanide (HCN). If the room burning has PVC i.e. chlorine then the smoke will contain hydrogen chloride, if it is fluorine, then the smoke will contain hydrogen fluoride or if it is bromine then the smoke will contain hydrogen bromide. Such toxins will cause irritation and choking to the person that is caught up in the
“Firefighters save more than homes. They save hearts, memories, and dreams.” This quote means that their is more to being a firefighter than most people would think. In December of 2010 my house caught on fire, my family made it out safely and today we have rebuild in the same house just bigger and better. I have done a lot of research and have heard a lot about many kinds of fires that my dad has told me about when he was a fire fighter.
According to Mroszczyk (2012), safety engineers have two areas of concern to fire: the prevention of a fire and the suppression or extinguishment of a fire. An effective fire safeguard platform embraces fire defense training, fire suppression systems, and fire prevention practices to attempt and eliminate the causes of fire to preserve life by decreasing the potential for fatality, injury, and property destruction. By employing and sustaining an aggressive and comprehensive fire protection prevention boosts efficiency and minimize accidental life or physical loses. In 1992, NFPA 25, Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water Based Fire Protection Systems was first published.
Worldwide, tobacco use causes about 90% of lung cancer deaths, 30% of all cancers, 20-25% of coronary heart diseases and stroke deaths, and more than 80% of chronic bronchitis and emphysema”. (Jordan 1). Secondly not only does it affect smokers but even people who don 't even partake in the activity of smoking cigarettes. Second hand smoke is a serious issue and can cause cancer almost easy as being an actual smoker can.
As smokefree.gov stated, the smoke “contains over 7,000 harmful chemicals, at least 250 of which are known to damage… [ones] health.” Also, the secondhand smoke “can… stay in the air for several hours after somebody smokes.” Therefore, it is harmful to secondhand smoke. B. Reason to listen: So, let’s look at why smoking should be banned in public places.
Smoking causes close to 40% of cancer death in the US. Each year, cigarettes kill about 500,000 deaths in the US and about 6 million deaths around the world. Cigarettes are the reason for most of the deaths in our society today that is not a death by a natural cause. Even though smoking has been in a sharp decline in the past decade, there are still around 40 million of people in the US that still smoke cigarettes. This high number really concerns many doctors and
