In 1980 Candy Lightner was a woman who stood up against drunk driving by creating a club called MADD (mothers against drunk driving). According to their website (madd.org) their mission is “To end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking.” MADD’s goal is for there to be no more victims in the entire United States. She has started managing a new organization she started instead, called We Save Lives. This organization focuses on the 3D’s distracted, drugged, and drunk driving. We Save Lives “mission is to educate, hold drivers accountable, support victims' rights, and help others find the courage to intervene among their friends and family,” says Dawn (a volunteer, part of the WE Save Lives organization). Candy says “I was burned out and I was spending more time dealing with board politics then the issue of saving lives,” when she was asked why she truly left MADD. Candy also said the true difference between the two organizations was that “We Save Lives is an international partner organization that focuses on the 3 D’s, drunk, drugged and distracted driving. We believe that drunk driving is a multi-faceted crime deserving multi-faceted solutions, not just one. We are very concerned that drugged driving is a growing threat on our highways and deserves far more attention and legislative action then it is getting.
