Canicus took an eggshell white cloth and wiped his blade, instantly soaking the pure cloth with a deep crimson. Another battle, another day, he thinks quietly to himself. A roman soldier is proud of their city, yet as he ends his thirtieth birthday causing more bloodshed, Canicus can’t help but feel as though it isn’t his purpose. Again, not the type of feelings a high ranked soldier should feel for his homeland. Canicus grows weary of the multitude of death and destruction slowly ripping the city to shreds from the inside. Looking back, he remembers how quickly the city had flourished. He aided in the vast expansion, leading his troops through the thickest of war. Then he heard a loud, steady thumping to his left. They had just finished a less than satisfying lunch in Lucania when Pyrrhus and his army arrived. Massive elephants were the cause of the earth shaking (Everitt 199). This was something the roman army hadn’t anticipated. Canicus sprang up and readied his teams for battle. He had never fought against such immaculate creatures, but he had to keep a level head. His men depended on him. Canicus, “born of fire”, and now elephant murderer. After plunging his weapon was drenched in blood of man and beast, he took a step back to evaluate the battle. Even with so much chaos happening around him, it was ultimately silent in his head. He suddenly became more aware of his breathing and how dehydrated he had become. His mouth was dryer than desert and then he snapped back into reality. Canicus could see his men and members of the opposing side dropping like flies around him. This went on for only several minutes but in his body he felt as if he aged ten years. When he knew the odds were ultimately against him, he received the order from the head commander to fall back Everitt (202). Canicus cursed the ground at his feet and called his troops back. He swore that he would gain victory over Pyrrhus. It surely would not be the last he would encounter such a threat to his precious
