Introduction

Recently in Australia, canine breed bans have become more common after incidents of attacks and dangerousness. It is expected that people follow the laws regarding some purchases of certain breeds and ownership.
My objective through my personal interest project is to discover what leads to the canine bans, whether this affects society’s views towards certain breeds and what these actions reflect about Australian society. I personally, strongly believe that depending on the animal, that the concept of ‘nature vs nurture’ is an important aspect to consider when the banning of a domestic pet is being considered. For example, a dog like a Pitbull is being banned in Australia due to an incident of a dog of that breed getting loose from his owner, whom did not know how to bring up a dog to not be dangerous and harmful. But these days, there are dog fighting rings that are becoming more and more common even though it is illegal and there has been a crackdown on such. These animals are taught to fight and do not know any better, their survival instinct kicks in and they are made to viciously attack.
My comparative studies for this research task is between ‘Nature vs Nurture’ and if it plays a major part in the outcomes of behavior of domestic canines. My cross-cultural component is examining the difference of opinions of people who believe that the breed of the dog is more important than how they are raised, compared to people who believe the opposite. My continuity and change element will be covered by examining how this has changed over time
My personal interest project topic is connected to society and culture through the concepts of change, stereotypes, society and beliefs which will all be explored in the development of my research
