The reformation brought with it widespread debate over Lutheran ideologies and Catholic ideologies. The Catholic church obviously did not approve of Luther’s ideas because they were a serious threat to the churches power. It is for this reason that the church made great attempts to crush Luther’s reformation to regain the trust of the people. One of these attempts to crush Luther’s reformation, was the work of Cardinal Cajetan. Cajetan wrote Faith and works to refute Luther’s ideas. As a result, Cajetan’s work developed clear differences between Lutheranism belief and Catholicism beliefs. Luther’s reformation was based on the idea of faith. Cajetan looks at the different aspects of Luther’s ideologies. Cajetan first argues against Luther’s Faith Doctrine. Cajetan believes that Luther is interrupting the faith described in the scriptures incorrectly. Cajetan argues that the faith Luther is referencing to support his belief is not what Luther claims it to be. One agreement that Cajetan uses to defend that not all is justified by faith is from the book of Ephesians. “One God, One faith.” Cajetan elaborates on this “one faith” with the argument, “Obviously, my own faith does not entail believing that this man wo is receiving the sacrament is her and now justified or that the body of Christ is in a particular host.” Cajetan claims that it is childish to believe that one’s sins are forgiven without some form of charity involved. Cajetan says, “Charity is this friendship between man and God.” Therefore; it is ridiculous to believe that man is saved through faith in God.
