What is CPR? CPR is defined by the oxford dictionary as cardiopulmonary resuscitation. CPR is an emergency lifesaving procedure that is done when someone 's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. This may happen after an electric shock, heart attack, or drowning. CPR is a combination of rescue breathing technique and chest compressions. This paper seeks to elucidate the benefits of making CPR mandatory within the high schools.
As technology advances so does the medical field, and as time goes by, even skills such as CPR have been improved. CPR was invented by Peter Safar and James Elam in 1956 .However the skill was not integrated until 1957, when the United States military adopted the resuscitation method to revive unresponsive victims. However to improvement in bystanders assisting in CPR the targeted age group must be more informed.
There are multiple barriers in performing CPR that must be overcome. Some of these barriers include a lack of time and availability. It was also found evident that bystanders with knowledge of CPR did not affect the willingness to respond.
So why should we implement CPR within our high school? According to the Medical Encyclopedia “Permanent brain damage or death can occur within minutes if blood flow stops. Therefore, it is very important that blood flow and breathing be continued until trained medical help arrives.
