Why do you go to the dentist to get cavities filled? Why can’t your dental hygienist do it? Dental hygienists go to a different school for a different degree. They learn the same things a dentist does, but are qualified for something else. Dental hygienists want to make sure your teeth are clean and healthy. They also want to make sure patients are keeping their gums, teeth, and enamel healthy. Dental hygienists do a lot of different things. BLS.gov states that dental hygienists do the following, remove tartar, stains, and plaque from teeth, apply sealants and fluorides to help protect teeth, take and develop dental x-rays, assess patients’ oral health and report findings to dentists, document patient care and treatment plans, educate patients …show more content…

The only problem is, everywhere you look, different websites say different things. There’s a book called “Careers without a College Dental Hygienist,” by Charnan Simon. This book was written in 1999, it has the lowest salary. In the book, on page 29, it says the annual salary is 15,200 to 31,500. On BLS.gov, from 2022, it says the annual salary is 81,400. There are many qualifications for dental hygiene. As a person, they have to be able to talk to a brick wall. Dental hygienists are in people’s mouths. They can’t expect a patient to talk back. Another good quality they need to have is critical thinking. Critical thinking is important because in not just bad situations, but good ones as well, dental hygienists have to be able to think clearly all the time, know what they’re doing, and get the job done quickly and accurately. As a dental hygienist, they have to be detail oriented. They can’t slack off because they’re tired. They’re the health care workers. One slips up, and their career could be over.
