I picked Carolyn Johnson because she is a family friend who I admire. She has watched me since I was in second grade and she watched my sister since she was born. I wanted to know more about her and what it would be like to walk in her footsteps. Although she watched me as a child I wanted to observe from an outsider's point of view. Carolyn is a caregiver; she takes care of children during the day. She enjoys children because they are very fun and are forgiving. She functions better with children than adults. She has worked many jobs before including a school cafeteria cook and a retail store worker.. Helping raise other people's children has impacted her life in many ways. She has also had an impact on many other children's lives. She told me that she has received letters from previous children that she used to watch. Carolyn went to a Woolworth's Lunch Counter when she was 13. She ordered a coke and a hotdog as did a colored woman that came up behind her. That lady wasn't allowed to eat at the counter, she had to stand. Even at the age of 13 she knew that wasn't right. Carolyn said, “That lady was no different than me. She was a human too“. Carolyn believes, “In today’s culture everyone has an equal chance to become the best they can be”. She told me that you don’t have to be famous or wealthy, you must choose to lead a successful lifestyle. One of Carolyn’s hardest challenges was learning to work when she got out of high school.
