“Deadly Hits” by Lauren Tarshis analyzes the topic of concussions. Over 300,000 concussions, or brain injuries, occur each year in sporting events. Ms. Tarshis analyzes 13-year-old Zackery Lystedt, a Tahoma Junior High football player, who suffered a near-fatal concussion while playing football in Seattle, Washington. According to the author, Zackery ’s injury was the result of a head injury.
Christine Lan Thi Nguyen is a practicing artist and currently a student studying at UC Berkeley to receive her B.A degree in Sociology and Practice of Arts. She is interested in collaging, drawing, painting and utilizing anything that she gets her hands on. On her free time, she loves to explore and spend time with her family, friends and love ones. Her works mostly consist of kois and she has recently been drawn to working on self-portraits and enjoys discovering the effect of colors, lines, mark making and how it interacts with a new medium. Her work was recently displayed at the Worth Ryder Art Gallery, located in Berkeley, California.
In the story, Ella Sarah Gets Dressed, Margaret Chodos-Irvine tells a story of a young girl named Ella Sarah. This children’s story is geared for children in the younger age range, most likely preschool or just entering school. Chodos-Irvine tells a tale of Ella Sarah making tough stylistic decisions while getting dressed in a humorous style. For an early reader, the text was clear and easy to read. It was strategically placed mainly towards the top of each page without an overwhelming amount of words.
You are Susanna Boyd, an English colonist living in Virginia. Just like most people in your town, your parents came to America as indentured servants and worked very hard for seven years growing tobacco for a rich family in Virginia. When your parents’ contracts were up, they received clothes, tools and money to buy new land. They have a small farm in Western Virginia where they grow corn and raise pigs. You have grown up with plants and animals your whole life, and you are looking forward to getting married and raising a family on your own farm.
Throughout the seventeenth century, conflict between Europeans and Native Americans was rampant and constant. As more and more Europeans migrated to America, violence became increasingly consistent. This seemingly institutionalized pattern of conflict begs a question: Was conflict between Europeans and Native Americans inevitable? Kevin Kenny and Cynthia J. Van Zandt take opposing sides on the issue. Kevin Kenny asserts that William Penn’s vision for cordial relations with local Native Americans was destined for failure due to European colonists’ demands for privately owned land.
The essay Be Specific by Natalie Goldberg was an essay thats main point to me was respect. Respect is something that every individual deserves. A synopsis of what respect means to me all leads back to the golden rule, treat others as you want to be treated. The example that Natalie used that was the most realistic to me was when she said "Hey, girl, get in line.". Many people in today 's world do not take the time to use names it is always hey you, dude, bro, girl, and so the list goes on; as a result our generation is known for being disrespectful in regards to previous years.
The boys had strong beliefs in The south or the north, so they enlist in the army. Elisha Stockwell sighed, his recruitment paper he was not entirely honest. He told the officer he didn’t know how old he was. Their were many ways to get a young boy in the army. Some lie about their age officers often turn a blind eye to the boys.
Deborah Tannen, a professor of linguistics at Georgetown University, is a popular author in the United States of America. Mostly of her focus in her articles and books is on the expression of interpersonal relationships in contentious interaction. Tannen became well known after her book You Just Don’t Understand: Women and Men in Conversation was published. However, this was not her only claim to fame. Along with this book, she also wrote many other essays and articles including the popular article “Marked Women, Unmarked Men.”
In Susan Griffin’s “Our Secret,” Griffin seems to be trying to give answer to the reasons as to why people, such as herself, grow up into their characters and what past experiences influence the behaviors they exhibit. Her focus seem to be towards the reasons for why people do the negative things. She also continues to explain how everyone contains a secret of their own and that these secrets are commonly masked by a facade and that the way these secrets may be expressed differ from person to person. In attempt to help the readers understand how our past has a huge impact on our future Himmler’s childhood is used as an example. She claims that the current state of everything in existence may have been influence or predestined by the occurrence
Throughout her article, Brianna Strumm continuously puts forth insightful examples and scenarios that suggest a higher level of thinking. Strumm consistently refers back to Harper and his “ideological stance on ‘the family’, for example, [which] effectively encourages women to stay home, dis-incentivizes women engaging in paid employment, and positions them to depend on men.” (100, Strumm, 2015) In making this statement, Strumm offers an opportunity for myself as the reader to critically consider my own life and whether or not the conservative views on being a woman has affected me in a negative way. Personally, I was able to apply her statements to my mother’s circumstances as a single parent.
Janet Madelbaum, on the other hand, was unable to reach the same privileged status, although her family managed to provide her the same elite education which Janet completed with success equal to Kate's (cf. 22, TEXT??????). After an outstanding critical publication – and several more mediocre ones – receiving tenure at Harvard should have marked the peak of Janet's career. Kate points out that Janet has “accomplished the highest, at least in the world's view, in the academic marketplace” (45). However, the English faculty at Harvard does not welcome her the way she was used from her old university where she had been “one of the boys” (59).
Emma Lazarus and Anna Quindlen both think alike and differently about immigration in their pieces of writing. A similarity they both share is that they both think that people get along because of immigration and immigration is a good thing. Emma believes this because when she is talking about how she is talking about how the U.S.A is such a good place to go and says “with silent lips. Give me your tired,your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. This shows that Emma Lazarus thinks that immigration is a good thing because she believes that the U.S.A will take anyone and not reject them from coming in and that it is a land of hope.
Lana Del Rey composed the song “Young and Beautiful.” The lyrics to this song portrays the relationship between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan from the movie The Great Gatsby. It shows the fickleness of their relationship with one another, but also a soft cry from both people. The line “Will you still love me when I am no longer young and and beautiful” portrays character vulnerability. They long for one another, yet know there is something that prohibits them from believing in the love that bloomed between them.
