Alexandra Miles is not you average high school senior at Spencer High School. Alexandra is an expert at manipulating her peers in order to take what she wants, and this year it’s to be crowned Homecoming Queen. Throughout her life she competed in beauty pageants, and has never lost one. Though this year she is struggling to keep her head above water because of her father’s death and her mother’s lack of attention. This doesn’t make Alexandra soft, if anything, it makes her stronger.
Carrie is a book that has a lot of symbolism in this book is a lot about a girl that has the ability of telekinesis. Also made fun of by all the girls since she was little. They honestly feel bad after they made her when she snapped. The one that felt so bad was Susan Snell One symbolism is that there was a lot of blood from the beginning to the end and the color red is based on the human emotion angry.

The theme of this book is finding your voice because Melinda was assaulted before she even went to high school. And the way it was written, it was meant to send that message. All books are meant to have a message but this seems to want that message to get across to people.

Laurie Halse Anderson uses literary elements such as imagery, symbolism, and conflict, in order to reveal the protagonist’s emotional growth throughout the the novel. In the novel, Anderson uses imagery to show Melinda’s mental state throughout the novel. For example, “I stumble from thorn bush to thornbush-my mother and father who hate each other, Rachel who hates me, a school that gags on me like I’m a hairball. And Heather” (Anderson 125).
Another component of the prison-industrial complex are courts. Our court system is overburdened with cases of poor people who cannot pay bail, as well as public defenders whose caseload are so large that it does not allow them to dedicate the proper amount of time to each case. Many times this results in a large number of public defenders pushing for defendants to take plea deals. This infringes on a defendant 's fifth amendment right to trial by jury (see appendix 1). Many of the people targeted by police for surveillance are those who later face time in court fighting for their freedom.

The novel When She Woke by Hillary Jordan is about a 26-year-old girl named Hannah, who is trying to earn her life back so that it is normal, but who really knows what normal is anymore and who gets to say when you reach it. Hannah has committed the crime of murder for abortion, to match the crime she committed her skin has been changed to red. Nevertheless, in Hannah 's society, your punishment is having everyone know what you did considering the colour of your skin represents your crime. Flipping her life around Hannah must fight for everything she wants, including the love of her family, but mostly her mother. Carrie knew everyone at prom deserved to feel what she felt as they were laughing at her. Therefore, Carrie’s actions allowed her to prove her point, not only to those who attended prom, but also the other citizens of the town. Furthermore, Carrie not only knew she had to take care of those at the prom, but the ones who had organized her night to go awry. Carrie was seeking a way to show Chris and Billy they had done wrong and should not have messed with her. Her actions toward them exhibited how she was standing up for herself in a way that would leave an impact forever.
