In the 1970’s, Willa Brown was married to an Army officer during the Vietnam War and living in Germany during the height of the Cold War. She was asked ten questions about what she could remember, what her hobbies were, what she listened to musically, and what kind of car she drove. Mrs. Brown’s recollections may differ from some because she lived another continent away and the general atmosphere was different in Europe during that time. . The sudden bursts of cars as a way to express one’s personality, while being large enough to hold a family defined the 1970’s. Willa and Ollis, had three children in the 1970’s. “I drove an Oldsmobile as it was the most reliable car at the time.” (Brown, Willa) By 1970, the Oldsmobile was known for being one of the most successful cars and was the third most popular car behind Ford and Chevrolet (Oldsmobile 1973-1977). Asking Ollis Brown the same question, he responded with “I drove a jeep, because I was in the army.” (Brown, Ollis). In 1970 the M151 and subsequent variant the M151A were succeeded by the M151A2, the most advanced and refined of the M151 line. “I would say the happiest moment of the Seventies was hearing that the Vietnam war had ended and going back to seeing my family daily” (Brown, Ollis). Willa Brown answered the same question; however, said her happiest moment was the lunar landing “It was our ultimate sign we beat the Soviet Union.” (Brown, Willa). The rise of most homes owning televisions during this time, allowed for both events to be viewed from home.
