My idea to first study in economics was inspired from my father’s business. My father runs an automobile spray painting workshop and from a humble shop, he has worked hard to develop into a respectable workshop that draws clients from the community. My father’s journey is challenging one and I have seen him toil over finance matters in the dark hours during the economic downturn. At that time, I wondered why people’s spending behaviors change that caused his sales to decrease so sharply. This curiosity inspired me take the economics course at the A-Level studies. In the dramatic world today, we are facing the unstable economic settings caused by fluctuations in world’s oil price. This in turn affects my family’s livelihood and we need to think of innovative intervention. And this has pushed to engage with economics, at the personal, national and international levels.
To further broaden my knowledge of economics, I read the book, 23 Things They Don’t Tell You About Capitalism by Ha-Joon Chang. He clearly explains the ideas on finance and economy studied in school are quite different from the real world. He asserts that there are no such things as free and fair markets due to the existence of regulations, moral values and political decisions. I am really looking forward to meeting distinguished scholars, who will inspire my interest in economics and enrich my learning experiences in Hong Kong. Furthermore, coming from a diverse society, I hope to share my own unique culture in my country with other people and meet friends from different countries.
