CSI Communications Overview In the following pages, I will be explaining some communications used by the FBI Crime Scene Investigations unit. Crime scene investigators work full time; however, it is divided into part-time field work and part-time office work. The purpose of crime scene investigators is to serve as a means of justice for the victims, family, and country. The CSI unit handles the initial response, safety procedures, emergency care, secure and control persons at the scene, boundaries: identify, establish, protect, and secure, control of the scene and brief investigator(s) in charge, and the documented actions and observations of a crime scene. During the emergency care in a crime scene evidence can and will be tampered with or contaminated if not handled properly. During emergency care, the officer in charge is to Assist, guide, and instruct the medical personnel to where they should be and whom they should care for without risk of contamination and loss of evidence. Compromising evidence at the crime scene could lead to a compromised case and/ or trial. An example of what could occur with compromised evidence is the O.J. Simpson case. The last role in managing a crime scene investigation is documenting actions and observations. During this role, the officer or officers are to produce clear, concise, documented information of his or her observations and actions. This documentation is vital in providing information to substantiate investigative considerations. The policy for this step is that all “Documentation must be maintained and presented as a permanent record.” This includes personal information from witnesses, victims, suspects, and any statements or comments made. Anywhere a crime has occurred, including areas that may be unsafe and/or unsanitary. An investigator must always be prepared with all items necessary, they must be wearing protective clothing, eyewear, gloves and other safety equipment. They must be willing to work with body parts, bodily fluids and remains in every state of decomposition, in all types of weather and environment. The investigator will have to be tolerant of offensive smells and emotionally disturbing sights. A crime scene investigator most also be capable of carrying heavy machinery and handling the latest technology available to them while continuing to learn new technologies and methodologies carefully and methodically, even when under severe time pressures.
