To begin with, the role models of both Wes’ has positively and negatively impacted their future. In regards to the author Wes, his mother, Joy, played a huge role in Wes life because she pushed and motivated Wes to do well in school regardless of the environment he was living in and the financial issues his family was facing. As Joy explained, “ ‘Well, your grades obviously aren’t bad because you can’t pick this stuff up or because you are stupid, you are just not working hard enough’ ” (The Other Wes Moore 76). When Joy started to notice that Wes skipped school, she needed to take action to prevent Wes from making bad decisions for his future, such as becoming a drug dealer.

He went to high school in West High, Iowa, and competed in a number of sports; however, wrestling was the activity that Voss loved the most and had the most success. After high school Voss attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. He competed with the traveling wrestling team his entire career as a Wartburg Knight. While in high school, he was a three star athlete and recruited by Baylor, Houston, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas Tech. He committed to Baylor after receiving a major scholarship. During his Sophomore season his first run in with Marijuana occurred.
After the start of his football career, he began trying other sports, some of which he gained various metals and awards for. Although he continued competing in track and field, he began playing basketball and later on he made the All-State football team. This was just the start to his extraordinary athletic career. That fall, Payton continued to play football at Jackson State University. Among many other titles awarded him, Payton was one of the top scoring running backs during his junior year. Alongside his evergrowing football career, he maintained a bachelor's degree in communications during his time at Jackson State University.
