Did you know that the United States has a greater percentage of its population in jail than any other country? Jack Gantos had a pretty decent life until it all went downhill. Throughout the novel “Hole In My Life”, Jack is transformed into a different person. He changes both physically and mentally as well as learn valuable information and lessons. He also has to cope with and overcome obstacles that stand in his way. Gantos has changed from an innocent young man that would work for his father to a drug smuggler and finally to an inmate. Jack went from good to bad. Jack Gantos started off with a pretty decent life. He worked as an electrical contractor for his father. Jack had his own room as well as his own television. He states, “This was ideal. I had privacy. I had my own TV. I even had maid service- didn’t have to make a bed or pick a wet towel off the floor for half a year.” He had a good pay and he would play cards with the other electrical workers. He decided that this was not for him. Once Jack moved to St. Croix he was exposed to the drug world. “From the first week I landed in St. Croix I became part of a drug culture”. During the prosecution Rik and Hamilton blamed Jack which gave him two more years in jail. Jack tried to stay clean in prison. His memories from his past relieved him from his stress and his pain. One day Gantos found a file on him saying that he was “uncooperative and unwilling to tell the truth”. He felt that he did not have a voice and his actions defined him. Jack helped out with injured patients. One time he had to tend to a patient with a light bulb in his rear end. Jack wants to get out and he negotiates with Mr. Casey.
