After watching the movie “A Class Apart: A Mexican American Civil Rights Story”, I realized that I didn’t know much about how Mexico lost part of their land to the United States and about how hard life used to be for Mexican Americans compared to now. I learned about how Mexican Americans were treated in the United States. The movie was mainly about how Mexican Americans were discriminated and they were treated as inferior people. They were not seen as actual “Americans”, but as a second class, calling them names like “shiftless, lazy, dumb, etc.” Another important thing I learned is who was Gus García and what he did for Mexican Americans.
The American dream is not as easy as people say it is. The American Dream is being able to afford the necessities you need, without having to struggle and suffer just to put food on a table for their families. People think it’s easy to live the American Dream, but little do they know that there are people out there struggling to support their family. The history of migrant farm workers in California has changed extensively over time, especially under the influence of outside factors such as war and the desire to emigrate. They been fighting oppression, discrimination and equal rights in this country. From establishing a colonial labor system, enforced immigration laws, LAPD police brutality, El Plan de Aztlán, El Plan de Santa Bárbara, and the 1968 walkouts. The history of Chicanx people in this country is huge but is still not really well known by many but thanks to all of the fighting for equal rights that Chicanx people fought for we now have ethnic classes that teaches us about our own history and empower us to keep on fighting for our rights. All the way back to the industrialization era in the United States, the economy grew and new opportunities of labor became available.
Migrant farm workers are individuals who enter the United State or any other country illegally or legally to work in agriculture farms. Most of these farm workers are temporary and some are seasonal workers. There are many issues and challenges facing migrant workers. Migrant farm workers must survive many challenging conditions so that American can have the best selection of all the fresh foods found in farms. My grandfather was an immigrant that migrated from Yemen in 1970 and was working in a farm in Fresno CA.
