Tony Taylor is a 39-year-old separated African American male who presents to have Antisocial Personality Disorder, however, I believe he should be diagnosed with F60.3 Borderline Personality Disorder. According to the DSM 5, Tony meets seven out the nine diagnostic criteria; 1. Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). 2. A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). 4. He has reported having impulses to stab other residents, Tony is described as manipulative and charming by others. Tony currently reports having an alcohol addiction, but used to abuse cocaine and heroin and reports have three weeks of clean time. Tony has been arrested multiple times for armed robbery and kidnapping, but minimizes his responsibility in those felonies. Tony entered the shelter two years ago, after being kicked out by his partner for his temper and substance abuse. Tony’s childhood was not ideal, his father left him and his mother when he was a baby, because his father had an affair with his mother’s sister; since then he has been treated like the outcast of his family. Tony was physically abused by his mother’s boyfriend and no one in his family seemed to care. Tony’s mother suffers from Chronic Depression and has undergone extensive psychiatric treatment. Tony reports that all of his mother’s children have psychiatric or substance abuse issues. Tony reports dropping out of school at seventh grade because a teacher embarrassed him and then began engaging in risky behavior at age 16. In his late teens and early 20s, Tony reported abusing cocaine and heroin consistently for one year and then stopped using. He continued to binge drink every few weeks. At age 19, after an argument with his wife, Tony cut his wrist and was hospitalized for six months, where he was prescribed antidepressants, an unknown tranquilizer and psychotherapy.
