The film Castaway has many repeating themes or motifs throughout. Castaway is a story of the life of a FedEx worker who becomes stranded on an island after surviving a plane crash that killed the other three of board. After watching this film I decided on the three most important motifs that are very eminent throughout. The three motifs the film focuses on the most are time, symbolism, and isolation. Time is a very important theme in the film Castaway. For example, the protagonist, Chuck, worked for Fedex and he preached about getting things done fast. In his life before the crash, he always wanted to get things done efficiently and quickly. Time was so important to him, not just at his work, but in his everyday life. Being stranded on the island, he realized that not everything is about being fast and that he should enjoy the good moments in life. He had regrets that maybe he didn’t savor the good and important moments in his life before the crash. Those memories were very precious to him when he faced years of isolation. Isolation has major effects on the protagonist, chuck. He is stranded on the island for four years and you can see the effects set in throughout the film. An example of how he was affected is how he talked and argued with wilson, he was alone for a long time and he became lonely. Another example is that he made a noose for himself because he thought that was the only thing he could control, his death. Chuck drew a picture on his girlfriend, kelly, of the inside on the cave he was staying in to just have something to do. During certain parts of the film you could tell the isolation was getting to him because he would get aggravated about things fairly often. Of the other hand, staying of this island helped him learn new things, become more resourceful, and learned to savor and be thankful for the good things in
