Perseverance should be Castle’s middle name because he sure knows how to do it. Castle, only a teenager, has many obstacles he is overcoming. In the book, Ghost Jason Reynolds details the life of Castle and how he loves sunflower seeds, and how he loves the track. Not to mention the tough times the Castle is going through and how to persevere through it, even though he faces many obstacles. He uses this little fire inside of him to run faster. Also, when Castle was just trying to run he was not running very fast then and Lu picked on him because of his shoes. He started to beat and keep up with the fast runners. This can also be seen when Castle was just watching the track practice. Then he walked over and the coach said tryouts were a week ago. Also, the track coach said this was the best track team in town and only serious runners could keep up with them. He told Lu to want to race and Lu laughed. It's like after the accident with his dad he has to prove he is better than everyone. He shows confidence and uses running as an outlet by having confidence in himself. “So I had nothing holding me back from showing Lu that he wasn't all that”(Pg:16 Reynolds). This shows that Castle is using running as an outlet because running has gained confidence that he has never had before. He also uses running as an outlet by finding new friends. Also by talking to his coach about stuff that he does want to talk about with his mom. Lastly, Castle has used running as an outlet because he uses his anger in a good way instead of getting in a fight at school and being off the track team he uses his anger to run faster and beat Lu and win
