The setting is the environment in which a story or event takes place. The setting in a story, can include a specific time and date. Setting in a novel can hook the reader and cause the reader more interested in the portion of the scene. In Unwind by Neal Shusterman, he helps the reader envision the world that the three runaway unwinds experience. By using many different techniques that provide the reader with images in their mind of the world.
Some parts to my life can relate to Holden from catcher in the rye to well. In someways I can personally relate to Holden and in other ways Holden can relate to my brother. In the ways that I can relate to Holden are how he keeps all of his feelings bunched up and thrown deep so no one can find them. We both aren't people who wear our emotions on our shoulders like other people because if people find out the real way that we feel they might treat us different.
Holden Caulfield lives his life as an outsider to his society, because of this any we (as a reader) find normal is a phony to him. Basically, every breathing thing in The Catcher in the Rye is a phony expect a select few, like Jane Gallagher. What is a phony to Holden and why is he obsessed with them? A phony is anyone who Holden feels is that living their authentic life, like D.B. (his older brother). Or simply anyone who fits into society norms, for example, Sally Hayes.
Catcher in the Rye has given a voice to millions of teenagers worldwide who have dealt with mental health issues. Set in the 1950s the novel Catcher in the Rye, by J.D Salinger follows a 16-year-old named Holden who has last his brother, alienated himself from his peers, and is terrified of growing up. After being kicked out of school Holden goes on a two-day bender in the city. On this bender Holden finds himself surrounded by thousands but at the same time alone. On the journey, Holden experiences different scenarios where he feels he has completely nothing and almost debates committing suicide.

In The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Mr. Antolini gives Holden Caulfield advice when he is at one of his lowest points. Already aware of Holden’s mental state and position on school, he quotes Wilhelm Stekel, a psychoanalyst, “The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.” (Salinger 188). Although Holden fails to grasp Mr. Antolini’s message, the quote applies directly to his life because of his relationship with death as a result of his younger brother, Allie’s, death. Mr. Antolini uses this quote specifically because he wants Holden take a step back and try to live for a noble cause instead of resorting to death.

The character of Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye is a prime example of someone being stuck in the idea that society is unchanging. Society is just how a person perceives the world in front of them. The eye of the beholder is the one that creates the society of their choice.
Holden Caulfield, the main protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, embodies the classic teenager in the process of discovering himself, and how the world works. But, regardless of Holden 's rich, prep school lifestyle, the series of events that have mapped out his life up to this point have utterly affected his emotional well being and perception of the world. From the outset, I have to say that “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger has been one of the most important and influential pieces of literature I have ever read. At its core, the book is a superb coming of age novel which discusses several extremely powerful themes such as the difficulties of growing up, teenage angst and alienation and the superficiality, hypocrisy and pretension of the adult world. These themes resonated deeply with me and were portrayed excellently through the use of powerful symbolism and the creation of highly relatable and likable characters. One such character is Holden Caulfield whom the story both revolves around and is narrated by.
When someone asks you what is a setting in a story the first thing that will pop in your mind is that it tells the time place of the story, but it’s much more than that. A setting is a literary device that authors use to create a mood or provide clues about the inner character's life. Having a setting in a story is very important ,without it it has no meaning. A setting tells a lot about a character and their lifestyle and habits, without it we won't know much about the Protagonist in the story. A setting is like a mirror to a character, it defines the characters emotional behavior and actions.

In Chapter 1, Holden says: “I’ll just tell you about this madman stuff that happened to me around last Christmas just before I got pretty run-down and had to come out here and take it easy” (Salinger.1). This shows that what Holden later on tells us is a flashback to his journey from around last December and that it has all already
The fact that the book can still today make readers learn very important life lessons, shows that it is still a very relevant book almost 70 years later. The Catcher in the Rye is still a very relevant book that should be continued to be read in high schools across America. The book allows the reader to form connections with Holden. The book is still a well written and famous piece of artwork. And the book teaches us very important lessons that are valuable throughout life.
Usually considered a controversial novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger can often express the feelings of being an outcast and the desire to find a meaning in the world. Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of the novel, though often complains of the phoniness of the world around him, has a way of creating a deeper meaning within the readers. While the truth may be that Salinger purposely set the story in such a way that the readers will be able to connect with Holden, not often do readers find it easy to do so. While Holden believes that everything around him are wicked and phony, there is part of him trying to protect the innocence of those not corrupted by such phoniness. Although Holden wants to protect and save the innocence of children, can he really do so if cannot protect himself and trust those around him.
Setting in a novel, poem, or drama is one of the most important literary techniques. Contrary to what some people think, setting is not just a place where events of a plot take place. In essence, setting is much more complex which is sub-categorized into three elements: • Time • Location • Duration Time refers to the period in which a story takes place. A story can take place in near past, distant past, present, future, and so on.
