In the religious tradition of Catholicism, one of, if not the central belief revolves around life after death. More specifically, Catholic beliefs are rooted in salvation after death via the resurrection and “second coming” of Jesus Christ, the son of God. In Islamic faith however, Muslims believe in salvation during the “day of judgement” communicated to them by the prophet, Mohammed.
Through Jesus’ triumph over death on the cross, Catholics believe that when Jesus returns to Earth, all souls, living and dead will be judged and either be rewarded in Heaven with God or spend an eternity in Hell. These beliefs are primarily derived from a combined text of thousands of sources, the bible. The bible tells Catholics that their belief on life after death is communicated and achieved through Jesus Christ. John 11:25-26 evidences this stating: “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” This shows the significance of Jesus' role in achieving salvation for everyone once they have left their lives on Earth. Two primary pieces of literature from the bible which dictate Catholic life and belief are the 10 commandments and the Nicene Creed. The 10 commandments are a set of principles given from God that all Catholics are instructed to follow in order to live an acceptable life. They dictate that Catholics should not steal, kill or lie, among several other things. These rules instruct Catholics on how to live a life that is fit in God’s eyes. The Qu’ran is the written word of God which was communicated to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel. Among these messages from Gabriel came instructions for Muslims to practice The Five Pillars of Islam. These pillars dictate 5 aspects of Islamic faith which Muslims are expected to follow to be accepted in the eyes of Allah: Shadah- A profession of faith (belief in one God), Salat- prayer 5 times daily, Zakat- paying charity for the poor, Sawm- fasting during the ninth month of the islamic calendar (Ramadan), Hajj- a pilgrimage to the holy land of Mecca at least once in one’s life.
