36,000,000 young people play organized sports every year and with an estimated 1.6-3.8 million concussions each year, 87% of parents worry about their child getting a concussion. Doctors are trying to find new ways to diagnose concussions and proper ways to treat them to reduce the number of concussions kids get through sports. Though studies have proven that concussions can damage the brain severely and even permanently, with meticulous treatment, you can recover and return to living a healthy, active life. A concussion is a brain injury caused by any blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head and body usually during contact sports (such as football and lacrosse). Concussions are common during contact sports because of helmet to helmet plays. Symptoms of a concussion vary depending on how the severity of the injury. A loss of consciousness is not always a side affect of a concussion. Some people do experience a loss of consciousness, but others do not. Some symptoms begin instantly, whereas other take, hours, days, weeks, and sometimes even months prior to the concussion. Rest is the most appropriate way to allow your brain to recover from a concussion. Your doctor will recommend that you physically and mentally rest to recover from a concussion.This means avoiding any sports or active activities until you have no symptoms. This rest also includes limiting activities that require thinking and mental concentration, like video games, watching TV, schoolwork, reading, texting or using a computer. The doctor may also say that you require a shortened school day or workdays, take breaks during the day, or have reduced school workloads or work assignments as you recover from a concussion because it can postpone the healing process when the brain thinks too
