Global Warming In Greenland Essay

768 Words4 Pages

In today’s world, Earth is getting warmer every year. With each year going by, scientists have more data to prove global warming is becoming more of a threat. The greenhouse effect and pollution is contributing to the temperature rise and is causing the polar ice caps to melt. A side effect of the melting, the water will flow into the oceans causing sea levels to rise and putting coastal cities in danger. As global temperatures and sea levels rise, there is only so much humans can do to slow down the process and to maybe even make it stop as a whole.

Whether humanity wants to admit or not, the temperature is rising globally and people have to accept it as what it is. The main reason scientists are worrying about global warming is because …show more content…

There is many places that are starting to receive the effect of the warmer airs and oceans and it is causing glaciers and ice sheets to crack and break off and melt in the ocean. North pole ice floats on the ocean in a flat sheet of ice. In Greenland and Antarctica, the ice is thicker and mostly dome-shaped (Shepherd). Many researches have been conducted and Greenland has gone from losing 34 gigatons per year on average to losing almost 300 gigatons which is “enough meltwater for every person on the planet to drink 107 liters of water every day of the year” (“Greenland’s”). In Greenland, there is a glacier called Helheim which is named after a Norse myth called “realm of the dead” and the glacier is retreating rapidly and according to David Holland, a researcher at New York University, says Helheim has relinquished two miles. Even though ice loss has become very significant, Antarctica has even been seen growing and has been reported to growing about 63 gigatons a year (Boening). While the ice may be growing in some areas, it is unfortunately not enough to reverse the melting that has happend or even the future melting of the ice but it could possibly slow the process down. When the ice from glaciers and sheets melts, it has to have a place to proceed and it is causing sea levels to
