Although the people during that time period thought that the war was going to end quickly, simply because it was between Austria and Serbia, the war surprisingly included many other strong countries because of nationalism especially regarding the Balkan colonies wanting to be self-governed. But meanwhile, after Austria-Hungary proclaimed war with Serbia, countries from the Triple Entente later joined into war in a matter of time. On August 4th 1914 Britain declared war on Germany for violating Belgian neutrality. Australia as allies soon followed and sent troops who departed to Gallipoli in October 1914 along with troops from France, New Zealand and Britain. As the war continued the troops travelled to The Western front where 5,533 soldiers were seriously injured in only 24 hours, by the end of the year the list of casualties grew 40,000. In 1917, 76,836 soldiers were added to the list of casualties in battles in Bullecourt, Messines, and the four-month operation around Ypres, recognised as the battle of Passchendaele. For Australia, World War 1 remains the most damaging conflict in terms of deaths and casualties.
Austria-Hungary’s Cause of World War I The trigger of one gun being pulled caused the death of 17 million people. On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife of Austria-Hungary were shot and killed by 19-year-old Serbian Nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, during a motorcade after an unsuccessful attempt at bombing Ferdinand. Because of the Triple Entente of France, Britain, and Russia and the Triple Alliance of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Italy, this event started a chain reaction.
In the 1840s, nationalistic tensions were high and Slavs were beginning to desire their own state. These aspirations led to the meeting of the Slavic Conference in Prague, in which Slavic people want to be freed and form their own state; however, this put pressure on the Ottoman Empire, Austria, and Russia (pg. 675). This increased Slavic tensions provoked war between these major powers which became one step that led towards an even larger war: World War I. This directly occurred due to a later conspiracy created by Pan-Slavists in the hope of a Greater Serbia, which came to be known as the Black Hand.
