Though Argentina and America are diverse in religion there are both huge differences and similarities in what religions are most prominent. Both countries have a religious pluralism that allows for multiple belief systems to co-exist within each of the countries. When looking at what similarities and differences it is also important to look at the amount of involvement the individual and the population has with that religion. In Argentina, Roman Catholicism is the most prominent religion, counting for between 76-90% of its population.
Christian in Western Europe were divided into Protestant and Roman Catholic. The Protestant and Catholics fought each other for nearly 40 years. Thousands were killed because of religious beliefs. The pilgrims were known as Separatist, or the pilgrims are Protestant, they want to separate from the Church of England.
The Holy Ghost People by Peter Adair, was created in 1967. It exposes people of the Pentecostal religion, and their unusual rituals and ceremonies that they partake in. While watching the movie I kept on wondering why someone would want to sit through one of their services and participate in such odd rituals and behaviors. After reviewing the sociological theories we have learned in class, I concluded that Durkheim’s Social Consensus theory and Collins Interaction Ritual Chains theory both best explain the motivations for joining and staying in a religion that has such unusual rituals and extreme commitments.
The relationship between Chicanos and Central Americans is a unique one because there is often a misconception and racialization that Central Americans and Chicano are one in the same based on physical characteristics and the way their cultures have intertwined. As Alvarado mention in her article, mutual misrepresentation both groups have not been able to fully represent themselves as either Chicano/Chicana or Central American or perhaps a mixture of both. Both Chicanos and Central Americans for years have occupied the same places and have very similar customs leading to the generalization that all brown people are Mexican or of Mexican descent. During the thousands of years before the arrival of European contact, the Native American people developed an inventive and creative culture. They had created a very well round colonization among the extensive land. The year 1492 the Spaniards allowed for Christopher Columbus's voyage of discovery began a series of developments. Columbus traveling in hopes of finding faster route to Asia for trade and riches. While he never truly ended up there, the new found land was viewed as an opportunity for new riches.
When the settlers of Europe first came to the new world, they were introduced to the Native Americans. The settlers wanted the Natives to follow their culture and its benefits such as education, religion, and the usage of the environment. The Native Americans refused the request, stating they have their own type of culture, believing it to be the most superior; as a result, the Natives’ statement angered the ethnocentric settlers. Consequently, this caused a conflict between the two groups because of their culture differences. Firstly, the main culture difference consists of religion, tradition, and way of living.
In the 1930s, the president of Mexico, Cardenas, was in imperialism. He was introduced nationalism and land reformation. The mexicans wanted the British to side with them because the ability of certain workers. In 1938, Mexico nationalised mainly British oil companies. Mexico is part of one federal district and is made up of 31 states.
In Latin American Revolution before the revolution there were four main social classes; on the bottom there were the slaves and the Indians, then there were the Mulattoes (who were of African and Spanish descent) and the Mestizos (who were of Spanish and Native American descent), then the Creoles (who were of pure Spanish blood, but were born in America), and at the very top there were the Peninsulares (they were of pure Spanish descent and were born in Spain). The Creoles lead the fight against Spain because they wanted higher social status within their own lives, more political control over their own lives, and they were tired of Spain having total control over their economy. The Creoles weren 't allowed to do many things simply because they were born in America and not Spain, it didn’t matter that they were of pure European descent. Creoles were not allowed to hold political positions, only the Peninsulares were able to. For example, in 1807 only 12 of the 199 judgeships were held by Creoles, the rest were held by Peninsulares.
The “Columbian Exchange” also known as The Great Exchange occurred during the 15th and 16th centuries. It consisted of the transfer and/or trade of animals, culture, plants as well as humans such as the slave trade. From potatoes to chocolate and everything in between many foods and spices were transferred during the “Columbian Exchange” and ultimately became prominent food items. Additionally, livestock as well as other domesticated animals were also transferred changing the ways of many cultures for the better. However, during this trade several diseases were unintentionally transferred as well.
It is a common fact in today’s society that many persons believe that religion has brought about more division rather than unity, more harm rather than good. The Christian Church is primarily known for its numerous separations. Christianity is partitioned into several different denominations, of which the Methodist Church and the Baptist Church form a part of. Both of these denominations do contain similarities as well as differences that set them apart. Some of these similarities include they both believe in the Triune God, meaning three persons in one; the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The American, Mexican, and French revolutions were similar and different in their own ways. There was a common cause, goal, and effect of each of these three revolutions in addition to the unique causes, goals, and effects. All of these revolutions were caused by political instability, had the common goal of political reformation that was met through revolutionary events, that resulted in the formation and adoption of a new constitution and form of government. There were many causes that led up to these three revolutions, some are shared by all three, some only by two, and some are unique causes. All three of these revolutions were caused by political instability in the country these revolutions took place in.
Along with Brazil, Mexico has demonstrated a similar phenomenon, amongst the Nahuatl-speaking locals. It is another Virgin Mary figure which was discovered on a sacred Aztec site. The statue is commonly referred to as Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe, pictured below), however the indigenous people call her Tonantzin, after an indigenous goddess of the earth. Asides from religious figurines, there are many buildings in Latin America which are known to be influenced by the colonisation which are religious sites, most often churches. The increase in the number of churches in Latin America is another sign that religion took a large part in changing Latin American society and lifestyle.
There were many important causes and effects of the Spanish American War. In the 1880’s the U.S. wanted to achieve manifest destiny and so they expanded out west and took control over the Native Americans. There were four different motives that the United States could’ve used to imperialize: political and military interest and economic interest were mostly with trading. Humanitarian and religious interest, to help those that you have allied with or to spread religion and the rich help those who were “under privileged.” Lastly, social darwinism, the idea that you are superior than someone else.
Protestant Reformation Protestant Reformation was a European Christian movement. This movement, led by Martin Luther reformed the Roman Catholic Church practices and begin Protestantism. The reformation started because of the corruption of Roman Catholic Church. The corruption that begin the protestant reformation was phony relics and indulgences. The church priests would sell these relics to poor people knowing that they were fake and build on lies only to make money for the church.
The Spanish exploration and colonisation made both a positive and negative impact on Latin America. The arrival of the Spanish explorers to the new world made a big change and they are the reason Latin America looks the way it does today. However these people were ruthless and were the tyrants of the new world. One of Spain’s major foreign policy objectives since the advent of democracy has been to increase its influence in Latin America. Spain has had interest in this area due to historical ties and a common linguistic, cultural and religious heritage (Countrystudies.us, 2017).
