There are many scary things in this world, but for the most part, they are things that you can put in the back of your mind and push past it; then, there are phobias. Phobias strike a person with a type of fear that makes your feelings impossible to ignore and can actually influence significant parts of a person’s life. These fears appear frequently among people; they can range widely from person to person but there are some commonalities. Some of the main phobias among the population are acrophobia, aerophobia, ophidiophobia, arachnophobia, social phobia, and agoraphobia (Cherry, n.d.). Ophidiophobia is the fear of snakes. Some sufferers are actually scared of being bitten and poisoned by a snake, but many others are more so disgusted by snakes and find them more revolting than scary (Cherry, n.d.). This phobia has many symptoms in common with arachnophobia. This is more frequently referred to as a fear of arachnids, such as spiders and scorpions. As many 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men bear this phobia (Cherry, n.d.). It is common, again, for people to be scared of getting stung or bitten, but also, they can be horribly disgusted by these creatures. Within both phobias, people go out of their way to avoid snakes and arachnids and go to extreme lengths to keep themselves safe in case of an appearance from these creatures (Cherry, n.d.). While these are not the only phobias out there, they do make up part of the top 10 most common phobias among people (Cherry, n.d.). Acrophobia, aerophobia, ophidiophobia, arachnophobia, social phobia, and agoraphobia affect people in different ways, but they all have the power to completely take over and seriously impact the lives of those that have it. These common phobias can help you to understand the types of fear some people suffer
