From the pre-modern society in the early 1900s to the late modern society we see today, an increasing percentage of the world’s population is becoming more connected with each other across the globe, as a result of globalisation. The evolution of globalisation has led to the development of new media technology and has allowed people to seek out new ways of staying up-to-date with current issues or news. Historically, limited media coverage allowed the state to have more control over censoring news reports. For example, during world war two an air raid occurred over Newark in Northamptonshire, the government saw this incident as detrimental to the war effort and morale. However, in a current postmodern world, with the development of social media, Wi-Fi, 4G internet, smartphones and tablets a great majority of the world’s population has access to every news available. In the UK, each person on average spends 3 hours and 47 minutes on the internet daily through a personal computer or tablet, and spends 2 hours and 46 minutes daily watching television. Moreover, with existing news outlets growing their empires by crossing over to the e-media platform, they are expanding their media coverage seeking every available news in the world to make profit as business. Therefore, this allows the institution to get to new available news first before anyone else, and as we as population are spending a sizable amount of time watching television, using smartphones, tablets and personal computers, this factor adds to the equation of enticing a larger audience to use their services, meeting the media company’s goal of generating more revenue and attaining a larger profit …show more content…

Consumerism is also the theory that an increasing consumption of goods is economically desirable; also, a preoccupation with and an inclination toward the buying of consumer goods. As the world moves through the different stages of society, people start to experiment and test new things that could potentially be the next big selling product in the world. As a result, technology advances over time by experiment and creating new products are formed to sell them to the mass population. In the current society we now live in, this factor has caused major companies to promote heavily to a specific target market or even to the general population. Advertisements that appear on the internet, accessible via person computers, smartphones, tablets and now smart televisions, that may promote the durability, style or design, cost and other aspects of the product. This is because businesses now strategize their aims and objectives effectively and efficiently to persuade the target population into believing they need the product, thus the consumers are placed in a position where they are pressured to purchase a product in order to stay up-to-date with the rest of the people in society as technology advances. According to Statista.com the amount of capital spent on advertising in 2015 such as television, newspapers, magazines, radio, directories such as the Yellow Pages, billboards, transit adverts, posters, advertisements on apps
