Federal Censorship Needs to End Censorship in the United States has gone too far. Censorship is the practice of preventing access to information. This can be the removal of media to silencing individuals who are promoting ideas. The United States Government needs to restrict what it is censoring because it is a violation of its citizens first amendment rights, not censoring promotes free speech, and censoring anything can have negative effects on the citizens of the United States.

One of the major problems that arise from any type of censorship is the way it negatively affects the citizens of the US. A great deal of censorship is seen online from the federal government and private companies alike. One way the federal government has censored private companies online is fines for if a platform is used for adult interaction. This act preventing this interaction is helpful for the general public, but an entire industry felt a hit (“Censorship”). Online communication made many of the “adult” workers safer and prerecord while working. The government should be a tool to help all citizens of the country, not some. This act had made the safety of using online services for their work unavailable. Censoring online has led to other problems. What happens when information is wrongly censored? In the beginning of the COVID pandemic, online sources had “platforms wrongly banned and suppressed information regarding the origins of COVID 19” (Hagerty). By suppressing correct information, media had withheld the truth of what had been happening in the world to those who use the internet as a tool. This idea of wrongly censoring leads to the general public to question if what they are being told is true or if what they are not being told is more important. It is the federal government’s job to assist its citizens, meaning they should be informing them the
