Instead of allowing Dugard to exploit Phillip for her torturous captivity, school boards want to ban it for language. Hiding this novel conceals the fact that he kidnapped and raped an 11-year old girl almost daily. The only reason this novel is banned is because it’s the truth of what Garrido did to a poor girl, which was offensive and graphic, she did not make it up to better her story. Jaycee explained in the beginning of her novel her reasons for writing this, and the main reason she did was, “Phillip Garrido believes no one should find out what he did to an 11-year old girl… I believe I shouldn’t be ashamed for what happened to me, and I want Phillip Garrido to know that I no longer have to keep his secret” (Dugard 1).
Throughout the story “The Things They Carried” Lieutenant Cross’ character goes from being a boy at war, to a man that will execute orders sternly to get his men home alive. His character goes through a large change in a short period of time and he is described as having a “new hardness in his stomach (437).” In the story he uses the stone from Martha as a coping mechanism to transition himself into the man he now is. Lieutenant Cross uses the hardness of the stone to create the hardness in his gut when it is implied that he swallows the stone, and this action also signifies the burying of the feelings for Martha deep down.
Perchance some grown ups will find it interesting anyway. Usually, older folks have to read children’s books for something specific, to analyze it, to read it to their children, but maybe they do like reading it just for gratification. Nevertheless, a children’s book doesn’t have an audience restriction. It can educate and delight each one of us.
With the lessons or morals that Miss Watson was instilling amongst Huck, the reader may infer that she is a religious woman, maybe more specifically a Christian woman, since she was referring to Hell and Heaven while talking to Huck. However, though I am not Christian, I can infer that the religion is against the owning of another human being promotes peace and equality. If this is true, then what gives her the right to have slaves of her own. (80 words) Tom Sawyer was a boy that Huck almost seemed to look up to and admire even though Tom had a rebellious imagination. The reader learned that Tom “was a boy that was respectable, and well brung up…; he was bright and not leather-headed; and knowing and not ignorant” (Twain 212).
Summary • Books are challenged to protect other people, but I think if you are a parent you should be the one monitoring what your child reads and protecting them from books that are not appropriate for them. The government should not ban books just because a group of people thinks that it is
Anyone could be going through this exact thing but by taking away that right and freedom for someone to read something is absolute crap. Anyone can find anything wrong with something or not “healthy” for kids. Untimely it’s up to perception if you have lots of trouble with drug abuse and you read this book you can either say I’m going to smoke every day because Holden does this and blah blah my mom and this and that’s up to you, or you can see how this affected Holden in a negative way and ask for help. The problem is anyone can see negative in anything I could give you a child’s books and there could be references that might be ok for a kid but a four year old is not going to think about sex they are going to see a princess climbing a tower. If we say this book is banned because so and so says this, that is what we will see because when negative is pointed out that’s all one can think about.
“The state of kids publishing is such that it’s perfectly reasonable to be concerned about what agenda-driven and/or prurient content they’re peddling.” (Hemingway) This means it is very reasonable for everyone to be concerned about what the kids and young adults are reading. If parents are not concerned about what their child is reading, their child will follow many bad influences from books they have read. There are many influential books such as The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton that should be banned.
Not reading books marked as offensive children won’t be able to show empathy for people struggling through tough situations. It stops children from being curious and creates a more ignorant society that will be taught to other generations. This is showing children that it is okay to stop something just because you don’t agree with being said. Chiesa also says, “Removing books has a negative impact because it is censorship. When you censor certain ideas and beliefs, you create a more xenophobic and ignorant society.
This would also further play into the fear that a child would have due to the mature themes that they would not understand. To conclude, many kids would not understand the material presented in the book and start to have incorrect thoughts in their
Children just like us have a mind of their own and should be able to make their own decisions by themselves to either pick up the book or to leave it alone. Censorship does not exist in public places such as stores even though children enter stores everyday these kids have learned the decency of what they should or should not do they learned what they want and what they do not want what they like and what they do not like that should be a reason that children should be able to make censorship their choice.
Family trust and secrets are two major themes in the book Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. Readers are first presented with the fact that Lydia, the favorite child in a family of five, is dead, and they are taken on an crazy, complex journey to find out how and why. Through this journey they detect the growing tension between family members, and how their desire to keep secrets from each other ultimately lead to family discord. Personally, I believe that family members do not need to, but rather are encouraged, to share their feelings with one another.
A parent or the student should be the one who decided whether or not the book is appropriate. Also, when a child is sheltered from the world, a book with just a bit of adult material could help them understand what really happens. It could prepare them so when they do become older and get a job, the world doesn’t put them into complete shock. Taken from Common Reasons for Banning Books, “…it is important that the reader makes his/her judgments on the book.” To elaborate on this, another person shouldn’t tell a student what and what not to read.
Children should not learn about such things until they are old enough. Kids can be influenced by the things that they are taught at a young age. “Keeping books with inappropriate content out of libraries protects kids, but does not stop people from reading those books or prevent authors from writing them.” Many people think because they are banned means you can not read them. People can still read these books just not at a young age, this also should not stop authors from writing books such as To Kill a Mockingbird.
There are countless reasons that everybody should know why books are being banned all over the world! One of the reasons is that parents do not want their children to be exposed to inappropriate topics. Moreover, some books discusses topics that people object to like dark arts and homosexuality. However, there are also reasons why books should not be banned. When children enjoy books, it improves their vocabulary, and it teaches them life lessons.
