I believe that America is in danger of becoming a society like 1984. I think this because there are tell tale signs. Examples of censorship in America is looking at us in the eye, the government and news agencies. The second major issue that affects everyone in one way or another is public surveillance. The third and final comparison is the idea of endless war. The novel 1984 is very relevant novel because it is eerily similar to today's society. Media control is a modern issue that makes some people uncomfortable to discuss because no one knows if they are being told the truth or a pretty white lie. Endless war is when a country is constantly fighting or finding reasons to fight. In the novel 1984, AirStrip One is constantly battling against Eurasia and Eastasia. The citizens are never given a clear explanation of why the countries are fighting, and the battles change constantly. It wasn’t always clear if the wars were real. “If we judge it by the standards of previous wars, it is merely an imposture like the battle between certain ruminant animals whose horns are set at an angle that they are incapable of hurting one another”. Even though neither side would win they had to act like they were going to fight and win. An example in American society is the war on terror. This war has been going on since 9/11 in Afghanistan, Iraq and surrounding countries. Not everybody believed that George Bush should have invaded Iraq, especially because we didn't find weapons of mass destruction. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi blamed the Bush Whitehouse for misrepresenting the intelligence in 2016. As she stated on twitter “The intel didn’t state that Iraq had WMDs. The Bush Cheney WH. made the misrepresentation.” .
