Central Park Central Park is a park in middle-upper Manhattan, New York City. Central Park is the most visited park in the United States. Nearly 37.5 million people visit Central Park yearly. It’s one of the most filmed locations in the world.
HISTORY
On July 21, 1853, the New York State Legislature put aside more than 750 acres of land which would later be used to create America’s first major landscaped public park. They would soon call the park “the Central Park,” due to the fact that it is located in the center of Manhattan Island. The park opened 4 years after the land was put aside. There are many thing for you and your family to do, such as the Central Park Carousel. The current Carousel, installed in 1951, is one of the largest merry-go-rounds in the United States. On this Carousel, there are fifty-eight hand-carved horses and two chariots. The carousel was originally installed in Coney Island in Brooklyn.
Another main attraction is the Central Park Zoo. The zoo is a system of four different zoos and one large aquarium. The zoo is not your ordinary zoo. It is home to an indoor rainforest, a leafcutter ant colony, a chilled penguin house, and a polar bear pool. Yes. There are in fact polar bears in Central Park.
After you’re done enjoying the animals at the zoo and riding on the carousel, chances are you will be hungry. It’s a good thing that Central Park has two indoor restaurants. The first restaurant is the Tavern on the Green. The tavern was originally a sheepfold that housed sheep, but it became a restaurant as part of a renovation that took place in 1934. The next restaurant is the Loeb Boathouse restaurant. The restaurant overlooks The Lake in Central Park. Before the boathouse was created in 1872, the people who boated on The Lake had nowhere to put their gear and boats. This brought the idea of building a boathouse. So the people of New York did just that. In 1924, the boathouse was replaced by a rundown wooden structure. Not much is known about the structure, only to say that the structure existed and by the 1950’s the building needed a repair.
