Cerebral Palsy is my research topic. Cerebral Palsy is a disorder of the nervous system that affects the movement , muscle tone, and motor skills. I chose to discuss this subject to familiarize myself with the symptoms and causes ,however most importantly because my little brother was diagnosed with the disorder a few years ago. Throughout my research paper I'm going to discuss the causes and a few symptoms, diagnosis, the different types of cerebral palsy and treatments of the disorder. There are several possible causes that determines whether or not a person has cerebral palsy. One cause is infections during the pregnancy, this may damage a fetus developing nervous system. These infections include rubella (German Measles) cytomegalovirus …show more content…
The earlier Cerebral Palsy is diagnosed correctly, the better the opportunities are to provide the child with the physical and educational help they need. These can include early intervention, treatments, therapies, funding and benefit programs. Diagnosing Cerebral Palsy can take several steps mainly Developmental Monitoring, Developmental Screening, and Developmental and Medical Evaluation. Developmental Monitoring is when they track a child's growth and development over time. If there are any concerns about the child's development, then a developmental screening is next and it should be done in a timely manner. Developmental Screening is a short test that's given to see if the child has specific developmental delay, like motor or movement delays. Delayed diagnosis allows time to observe developmental milestones, rules out other conditions, but most of all it confidentially confirms the disorder. If there are concerns about the results then at that time the doctor will make referrals for developmental and medical evaluations. At that time they are to diagnose the specific type of disorder that's affecting the child. A misdiagnosis can occur if the signs that we call symptoms are not watched properly and tested. There really isn’t a way to prevent Cerebral Palsy from …show more content…
Spastic Cerebral Palsy is the most common type of cerebral palsy. It's muscle movements are beyond tense and very stiff. There are three different categories in Spastic Cerebral Palsy. One is Spastic Diparesis, when you have Dipelgia the muscles are stiff and its mainly in the legs, the arms are most likely not affected. Second being Spastic Hemiparesis, this usually affects one side of a person's body; most likely the arm is affected more than the leg. Lastly, Spastic Quadriparesis which is the most severe form affects all four limbs, trunk, and face. Usually the person isn't able to walk and have other developmental disabilities such as intellectual disability, seizures, and possibly issues with vision, hearing or speech. Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy includes the following; Athetoid, Choreoathetoid, and Dystonic Cerebral Palsies. People with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy have problems controlling the movement of their hands, arms, feet, and legs making it extremely difficult to sit and walk. The movements can be slow or it could be rapid. Sometimes the tongue and face are affected and the person has a hard time sucking, swallowing or talking. Next there are people with Ataxic Cerebral Palsy who have problems with their balance and coordination. People might have a hard time with quick movements or movements that need a lot of control, like writing. They might have a hard time controlling
