Bell’s palsy Bell’s palsy is a facial nerve disorder and it occurs when the nerves are squeezed by the swelling and the face results in paralysis. There is no known cause of why the swelling happens or why the face becomes paralyzed. Many people recover within a month however a long duration of complications are associated with the condition. Treatment varies depending on the severity and how long a person has had Bell’s palsy also how the body reacts to certain viruses. Not everybody gets the condition but people who are at least 20 to 35 years of age are at risk. It is best to look out for symptoms of Bell’s palsy because it will unexpectedly show up. If the patient had diabetes they increase their risk of getting the syndrome. For those that have repeatedly got the attack it may be that their family has a history of recurrent attacks due to genetic predisposition. Any upper respiratory illness and lung infections are risks of Bell’s palsy. Having high blood pressure also being obese are all much similar and they are risk of getting Bell’s palsy. Mostly people can recover without any treatment but it takes a couple of weeks for the face to go back to normal. There is treatment for Bell’s palsy such as medications, physical therapy also alternative therapy and surgery. Protecting the eye is very important and there are recommendations to do that. Physiotherapy and Botox are other options to get the face back in place. A neurologists and otolaryngology are Doctors you can talk to about the condition and can recommend what is best for the syndrome. Medications that can help are corticoid steroids, antiviral and analgesics. Steroid medicines reduce swelling and are effective in treatment. Prednisolone is mostly prescribed for at least ten days and they do help. Steroids should be taken immediately once the symptoms start. Chances of not taking steroids is not likely to recover.
