One example of an effective novel that discusses a pressing social issue is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. The Hate U Give is a novel and movie about a sixteen-year-old person of color named Starr Carter who lives in a poor neighborhood but attends a fancy suburban prep school. The balance is already uneasy but becomes even more uneasy when Starr witnesses her childhood best friend, Khalil, get fatally shot by a white police officer. Khalil was unarmed.
