The different personalities and behaviors of individuals around the world has been a broad topic of discussion. The different theories on the way we act upon things in certain situations can be portrayed by our personalities and events we have gone through in our lifetime. One way of understanding these theories is by reading psychological articles written by experts on the particular topic. Connecting the theme of psychological articles to fiction texts such as The Turn of the Screw, which is about a woman who claims she sees ghosts while away watching children, can help bring out a deeper meaning of the story. One character from the show named Chandler Bing, has a particularly unique personality separate from his other friends. One interesting aspect from Chandlers personality is the way he makes jokes when he’s in an awkward situation. His jokes, which he acknowledges to use when he is uncomfortable, could be interpreted as Regression. The article Defence Mechanisms states that Regression is when you go back to acting like a child. This particular habit is something Chandler is known for doing throughout many episodes of Friends. One example of when Chandler uses Regression is in the episode called, The One With Monica and Chandler's Wedding. In this episode, Chandler really starts to think about his and Monica's upcoming wedding ceremony. He decides to run away because he can't handle thinking about their name as “The Bings”, the other responsibilities they will have, as well as the fact that he's actually getting married. This scene indicates that Chandler was acting childish by not feeling responsible enough to get married and decided to literally run away from the wedding. He chose the easy way out and did not think about others or potential consequences from his actions, something only a child would do. The Regression used by Chandler in this episode, shows that he does not know how to deal with his anxiety and stress which lead to him to using this defence
