Bob Wiley exhibits symptoms of Agoraphobia (being afraid to leave his house), and Hypochondria (being hyper aware of illness and thinking he is dying). I feel like Bob’s symptoms of Hypochondria were slightly exaggerated. People with hypochondria typically don’t draw as much intention to their symptoms as Bob does and they typically express their ‘symptoms’ of an illness they believe they have to a doctor. Despite his symptoms appearing a bit overexaggerated, he still shows many real symptoms throughout the movie. Some of the symptoms of Hypochondria he displays are shown through how he uses tissues to open doors and how expresses his fears of having a fatal illness. It is easy to tell how lonely he is because of how Bob takes such an interest in Dr. Marvin’s family and despite being afraid to leave his house Bob travels far away to meet Dr. Marvin’s family. Bob probably has a fish because of how lonely he is. Some people might ask why a fish and not a dog or some other animal? That is because of how easy it is to take care of a fish. Bob, as someone who is hyper aware of what is going on around him, would probably be too anxious that he would do something wrong that would end up killing a pet, but since fish are so easy to take care of he probably wouldn’t have to worry as much about it. There are probably quite a few ‘Bob Wiley’s out there today. There are always going to people who take to the extremes when they are mentally ill. One reason Bob followed Dr.Marvin all the way to his house was probably because of how much he wanted to be cured and how he was willing to even go to extreme lengths to be
