Asterios Polyp Analysis Asterios Polyp uses color to effectively highlight the changes in Asterios’ viewpoint and mental state. Blue is most commonly used when Asterios is remembering his past, seemingly to demonstrate melancholy, sadness and regret for his past actions. In the beginning of the novel, when Asterios is watching the tapes he filmed while living with Hana, he is very clearly upset that his marriage had disintegrated. But it seems as if he is also feeling a lot of guilt for watching the tapes despite reassuring Hana he never would. When shown interacting with his students or teaching, he is shown wearing bright blue, a stark contrast to the purple background. This culmination represents both a collision of past and present as they are reunited, and the new vision Asterios begins to have of the world, which is definitely more than dualistic. The bright saturation of the colors also communicates that, although they are both assertive, they can get along just as well through compromise and mutual understanding. He is the one who begins to show up in pinkish tones, showing a new acceptance of himself and his various faults and wrongdoings. Hana is now dressed entirely in green, as if his perception has changed from her simply being a love interest, to actually being an intellectual and another human being he can share experiences with. He has never seen her in this way before, always dismissing her opinions, therefore the introduction of an entirely new color, green, shows how they both have changed since having seen one another. The resurgence of yellow shows that he begins to carry his dreams over to the real world in a more pragmatic fashion, where he actually begins to see the world as it really could be, unclouded by past regrets and grandiose
