An author’s use of metaphors can either make or break their story. If used too often or too abruptly, it leads to a generic narration, causing a lack of engagement from the audience. If used correctly, it can make for a highly compelling story, one that forces the reader to empathize with the characters and deeply experience the story as opposed to simply reading it. Metaphors are an influential piece to the literary world due to, “the process of using symbols to know reality occurs”, stated by rhetoric Sonja Foss in Metaphoric Criticism. The significance of this, implies metaphors are “central to thought and to our knowledge and expectation of reality” (Foss 188). Although others may see metaphors as a difficult expression. Metaphors provide the ability to view a specific content and relate to connect with involvement, a physical connection to view the context with clarity. As so used in Alice Walker’s literary piece, In Search Of Our Mothers’ Gardens.
I mainly use metaphors to help someone better understand a concept. For example, one could say that another is a walking dictionary. This helps us to infer something about another person. We assume that she knows a lot of words and definitions. Right now, I mainly see a lot of repetition and metaphors in music.
The Other Side, a children’s book written by Jacqueline Woodson about how a metaphorical fence divides blacks from whites. Clover, a little black girl who lives in a yellow house on the other side of a fence from a little white girl named Annie. The tone of the story is all people are made equal; We are trained to judge people by their skin tone. The symbolism is the fence; The audience was the children. First, The Other Side’s tone is everyone is created equal.

Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use” is about a mother and her youngest daughter waiting for the oldest daughter to return home for a visit after she had left for college. In this scene Mama tells us about how weak Maggie, the youngest daughter, comes off. Using new criticism I will be analysing six words from one of the sentences from the scene. Everyday Use reveals how cowardice can prevent one from excelling in personal growth. Maggie has her chin on her chest.
WW5 - Essential Life Metaphor Currently, my life is a carousel ride at an amusement park. It has its ups and downs throughout the week, but, for the most part, repeats itself on a weekly basis. My life continually goes round until my carousel of life breaks down, or overstresses, and needs to be fixed.
