After the collapse of the Roman Empire the social structure in the West was changed in a relatively short period of time. People were organizing themselves in smaller social structures, less organized, semi-tribal organizations, largely agricultural oriented, allowed a certain cultural fusion of barbaric tribes and what was left from Roman culture. Consequently, huge cities that were once the source of economical, social and political regional power were transformed into decentralized and fragmented smaller territories.
