When we look at all the different historical changes and events society highlighted throughout Maria Van Rensselaer letter, we can see several events being displayed over the course of time such as, religion, economy/ trade, greed and war. These were just some of the historical events and movements she witnessed throughout this time in society. As we examine this historical time within this society, we can see how the settlers all relied upon many resources in order to live. First, we can see from her letter she speaks of trade taking place. New England was much more equal than Chesapeake. The war between the Indians and the english stemmed over land. The Indians, had no problems with welcoming the settlers on to their land. Their issue was they had no knowledge the settlers were keeping their land. Also, there were other issues between them which involved religion. The settlers felt everyone including the Indians should believe in Christianity only. But the Indians had no interest in converting, they had their own beliefs. This made the settlers look at the indians as being evil. Another problem which caused problems between them was disease, which killed whole tribes (Pg 76). In the Puritan society, having faith was very much important to them, this was a source in which all of their other aspects of their society and values came from. Puritans,sought to reform the Church from within. They believed that “uniformity was essential to social order” (Pg 72). Puritans believed that God chooses each individual from the time they are born for salvation or for condemnation. Only God knew the fate of each person. From reading Maria Van Rensselaer letter we can see she is religious as well. When Maria Van Rensselaer speaks of the war between the Indians and the English, “she is praising God for not hearing of any calamities as well as asking God to preserve them and prevent them from receiving any reinforcements” (Maria Van Rensselaer). We can see in Maria’s letter she felt praising God and being a very hard worker (which she has done when it came to keeping the estate in the same condition as when her husband was alive), is a sign from the Lord’s good
