Pitty Sing was talked about why he was going on the trip, in the beginning, because he was important to the grandmother. The next and last time Pitty Sing was relevant to the story was a key part, near the end, when he caused the car to flip over.

Edgar Allan Poe’s style of setting strongly influenced the works of Roald Dahl. “The Raven”, a work of Poe, and “Lamb to the slaughter”, written by Dahl, share the same geographical location of a room. Using a room as the setting creates a feeling of claustrophobia in the reader and is manipulated throughout their stories. “The Raven” utilizes the feeling through “...rapping at my chamber door,”(Poe pg.1) and in “Lamb to the Slaughter” “The room was warm and clean..”(Dahl pg.1) is applied. Disregarding domestic responsibility and experiencing a peculiar adventure, Rip Van Winkle evoked a humorous and satirical interpretation of the New England life. As William Cullen Bryant stated, Irving used his “amiable” and “best-natured” satire to express his views about the life of America, ideally, religiously and politically.
If you look at Philadelphia now and compare it to 30 years ago, you will see that there is a drastic difference in many things. Yes obviously the mayors would be different, the city would have a different crisis most likely, instead of the budget crisis that we are in. There would be different trends going on with fashion and celebrities. But the biggest difference, is how neighborhoods look, who inhabit them, and somewhat of a social barrier in races. Let’s say this time was in the 80’s, the neighborhoods surrounding center city like Fairmount were known as some of the most dangerous parts of Philadelphia, which is highly unlike today.
