In Japan in the 1930s, the great powers looked to protect their economic rights within their colonies and spheres of influence through the use of high tariffs, dumping of goods, and other trade manipulation practices. The Japanese had lacking natural resources and began to use trade practices that appeased the U.S. and East Asia but not beneficial to British and European manufacturers. Japan sought to gain more sources of raw materials and heavy industry by taking over Korea, Taiwan and Manchuria. High tariffs were also used to limit the amount of goods imported from America and Europe. Japan experienced a depression during 1930-1932. Manufacturing prices fell and in order to keep factories running, production increased, and free market worsened
