In the novel, Lord of the Flies written in 1954, William Golding, the author tells the story of a group of young boys who are stranded on an island after their plane crashed. In hope to keep civilization, the boys try to build their own society until they get rescued but when the group splits, chaos occurs and boys die. Golding demonstrates the true nature of humans and how cruel, destructive, and violent people can truly be when society has fallen. In the novel, Golding reveals that the most important social commentary in the novel is, savagery and how one can fall under it and let it destroy all structure there is. Throughout the novel, there are many examples that demonstrate this but there is one particular passage that easily demonstrates this commentary. This key passage is found in the middle of the fourth chapter of the book when Golding is having Jack, explaining to Roger, Sam, and Eric how the use of face paint can help them hunt. Golding uses language & style and also characterization to evolve the confidence of Jack. Jack has had trouble killing a pig but in hope of this mask he wishes to make, it can help him sneak up on it. The mask can give Jack less self-consciousness and shame that he has. Through most of the book so far, Jack has wanted to take charge and want to be in control and because he got turned down, it must have knocked off some of his confidence.
