Chapter Three Summary Slater introduces chapter three with telling us that David Rosenhan was greatly ill towards the end of his life. Slater later tells us that Rosenhan and eight of his friends fake they’re way into different mental hospitals just by saying “I’m hearing things”. In fact, Slater wanted to see how the psychiatrist can see the sane from insane. Later, Robert Spitzer gave Rosenhan rude criticism about his experiment.
In the novel NightJohn by Gary Paulsen, chapter four is mainly about Sarny’s memory of how bad it is to try to run away from the Plantation. Sarny first has a flashback to when Jim a field hand tried to run away from the plantation; In response, Clel Waller the slave master set the dogs at him while Jim tried to hide in a tree. He was unsuccessful and whipped while the dogs ate at his skin. Furthermore, Pawley was a slave on the Plantation when he tried to visit a girl on another nearby plantation.
The Nightjohn movie was very different from the book. One reason that it was so different is because of how much the Wallers are talked about. In the book they only talk about the Wallers when slaves are being punished. In the movie, they were shown much more. The Wallers don’t have kids in the book.
The book Nightjohn written by Gary Pualsen and the movie directed by Charles Burnett. The book talks more about the black slaves and Nightjohn teaching Sarny how to read. The movie talks more about the whites. Pualsen talks more about the blacks. Burnett talks about the whites mostly.
In chapter eight of Night, Elie’s father, Shlomo, struggled with inhuman treatment more than once. He became ill and was unable to control where and when he relieved himself. Shlomo had gotten dysentery from drinking the polluted water. The other sick prisoners he was housing with were so displeased, they beat him. “Eliezer… Eliezer… tell them not to beat me… I haven’t done anything… Why are the beating me?”
In chapter 4 of the book Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen the chapter focuses on why the slaves don’t run away and why Nightjohn is teaching slaves how to read and write. Chapter four starts off with a girl named Alice who is mentioned to be weird. But when she goes to the breeding shed she freaks out and becomes even more crazy. She is so crazy she runs away but eventually gets caught and has to be sewn back together. Then Jim is mentioned, another slave who ran away.
1) Isaac Hourwich’s purpose in writing this book is to oppose the claims of the Immigration Commission as there are also many stereotypes of Immigrants created by Native born Americans and also challenge the findings of the Immigration Commission. Hourwich uses his economic aspects to explain that Immigrants do not cause the labor market to decline, decreases wages, and increase unemployment in the United States. Most of the native-born Americans fear that as the rate of Immigration increases, it might hurt the American wage-earners. Therefore, there is an assumption that most American workers made was that “undesirable” Immigrants should be out of the country and keep the American workers busy. (82)
The book Night by Elie Wiesel is about his experience as a young Jewish teenager, forced to survive the atrocities inflicted on Jews under HItler's rule during World War II. Many major events are covered in chapters 6, 7, and Words in Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen. In chapter 6, John is resting after getting punishment by Waller, for the punishment impacted John so much he plans on leaving the plantation. In order for John to leave, he needs to make shoes out of lard, rawhide, and the use of pepper to throw the dog's sense of smell off, so he gets away clean. During this, Sarny is miserable due to her troubles that same fall, which makes her ready to become a breeder. Now, Sarny is sulking until one night John appears and tells her that he is taking her to school.
In the United States, history is often believed to be categorized to good and bad. But, sadly that is not the case. Many times the cruel stages in history are often sugar coated and disguised to be something that they are not. While the brighter parts of history are many times untouched/unaltered. The times of enslaved people throughout the United States should never be forgotten.
Gary Paulsen shows in his novel that the whites and Sarny’s master absolutely restricts any form of education from the slaves. It was forbidden, and if they were caught leaning, he/she would suffer dire consequences. Because so many children could not stop their ambition to learn, some just like Sarny went to “pit schools” way out in the woods at night. Another abolitionist named Sojourner Truth also wrote her own autobiography about her enslaved life. She writes, “You have teachers for your children but who will teach the poor slave children?”
In Elie Wiesel’s novel Night, he displayes a theme of desperation and confusion. It tells the story of the Jewish race from the point of view of a teenage boy. Their family then gets split, so the sister and the mother go to one concentration camp and the brother and the dad go to another. When they arrive to the camp, they get split into different sleeping quarters. Throughout the rest of their journey, they experience hardship and torture as in having to be “Pressed tightly against one another, in effort to resist the cold,” (Wiesel 98).
“ Human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere. ”(Wiesel 119). In the book Night by Ellie Wiesel, he tells his story about living through the Holocaust and the horrible events that took place in Auschwitz. It is important to remember the holocaust not only to make sure it doesn't happen again but to also tell the story of those who lost their lives to ensure no one forgets the horrible acts that occurred. The more we stay silent the more we are accomplices to the hatred of the world we have the power to use our voice for good to stop the bad.
If some one experience true suffering can they ever hold on to who they are? Suffering is physically or mentally in pain. In the book Night, while the Jews are in the concentration camp and in the ghettos, they suffered. In the concentration camps, Elie was separated from his family, beaten, running for hours on end, and whipped.
Nationalism is something that stimulate people to love, respect and proud in their nation such as language that related to nationalism among people by history, culture or face the problem together. Later on nationalism was found in every nation when national felt like their nation were threaten by other nation or same nation so they will gather together and this is called “Nationalism”. There were two kinds of nationalism in 19th century Europe are people wanted their independent and the power nation needed to dominate other country such as nationalism of Serbian and nationalism of German. “Nationalism means being a strong supporter of the rights and interests of one 's country.” According this quote related to meaning of nationalism because nationalism defined as a group or nation who love in their culture, belief in their traditional, language, and especially is their independence or people who wanted to control others country.
